Lol I’ve already done more research than you with a post of links to the issue. But you go on telling anyone with a problem that theirs is just an anomaly, like many of the posts Ive seen you make. Because Toyota can do no wrong and Tacoma’s are perfect right? :D Don’t get me wrong I love my truck but it’s not perfect and sometimes there are problems with Tacoma’s, that’s why I like learning about them here on TW you also see solutions.

Not to burst anyone’s bubble. But my ‘17 TRD DC 2WD had the leak 3 or 4 times. The last one. Only about 5k miles after the previous one.
And yes I got another Tacoma. This time. ‘21. There are a lot of threads about this complain here in the group. and no I didn’t go for another brand because there is nothing else out there. And yes the ‘21s ride way better than the ‘19’s down. And the automatic chair is comfortable. I’m not saying more comfortable because the regulars are not.
and I did file complains about it on a couple of different places. If it happens again I’m going to lemon it and make lemonade with it.
They’re supposed to pull the engine out to fix the problem according to Toyota. Not push the engine to the side to try to fix it.

When I say 3 or 4 I mean a small minority. Toyota is not perfect... no product made by humans are perfect. Toyota is better than most tho.

Agree, Toyota and Tacoma’s in general are known for good reliability compared to other manufacturers. That’s why I bought mine.

I had the timing cover leak on my '16... Just got it back yesterday. They had it for a week and so far all looks good. They put their master tech on it and sounds like they took the time to repair it properly so it won't happen again... Fingers crossed. Sucks that this happens to some but glad to have found it while under warranty - costed me nothing, all covered. So happy to have it back - absence does make the Tacoma owners heart grow fonder.

True, but they did not cost $30k, $40k or $50k. My 85 lost a front seal at 300k. Cost me $10. and <hour to fix it.

Spotted the leak on my 16 when I was poking around. Dealer confirmed it was the timing cover but the parts are on backorder. Parts and labor came to $3600 but with my extended warranty I only pay my deductible.

Did anyone have any other maintenance done while their motor was yanked out?

I could be mistaken however unless you're beyond the drivetrain warranty it shouldn't cost you anything... I believe it's 6 years or 60k - so if you're under 60k it should be fully covered with zero deductible.
My dealer said everything looked good and nothing else was due for replacement... Not even the belt although I wish I could have had the spark plugs replaced. I don't think they pulled the engine in my case... just everything in front and under it to gain access.

I’m at 90K so I don’t believe I have any coverage under any factory warranty. I purchased an extended warranty so this repair is only costing me $200, thankfully.

Interesting you say they didn’t pull your motor. I’ve read threads that some have and some haven’t. I specifically asked and they confirmed they will pull the motor for this fix.

Either way, I appreciate the insight

Glad I spent the $ on the extended warranty when I purchased my '17 new in 2016... I've known I had the timing cover leak for a few months, but have been dreading both being without my truck for who knows how long, and having my engine pulled with all the potential for mishaps by the dealership given the complexity of the job. I'm now nearing 90k on my 100k extended warranty, so I took it in expecting a fight to get the work done. Without any hassle, leak was confirmed, pictures were taken and the 3rd party warranty company approved the ~$4k job no questions asked. Dropping my truck back off on Monday, so will report back with how things turn out!

Ok for real you need to monitor that like a hawk. I just found out my "repaired" cover totally failed. Good luck.

I'm guessing your from Colorado from your user name???? If so, which dealership did you use (if you are in the front range)... i'm up in summit county and have to come down to the big city to have anything done. I didn't have a great experience with my transmission issues at one of the Toyota dealers...
