Replace stock LED fogs with OEM halogens?

I know this sounds weird, but I'm looking to "downgrade" to halogen fogs in my '21 TRD OR with the LED package. My question is whether I can buy some OEM halogen fog housings and bulbs and just plug and play.

The reason is that once or twice a year I drive in bad enough snow that it coats the entire front and rear, but halogens are hot (inefficient) enough to melt accumulation off the lenses and keep them clear. I'm fairly certain my LEDs would not, based on what I've seen from other vehicles. I love my LED headlights so I figure I'll just replace the fogs. That way I can still see a little if it's dark but more importantly be seen.

Any concerns about the fuse or wiring or something else I'm not considering?

Yes you could do that. If you did, there are 2 different halogen fog options. Low power, low performing H16 fogs found on 16-19 non-TRD trucks, 20+ trucks and all Canadian trucks. Or high power, high performance wide angle H11 TRD fogs found on 16-19 TRD trucks. I’d definitely recommend the H11 TRD units.

However. There are full SAE LED assemblies that run hot enough that snow isn’t a concern. Diode Dynamics SS3 Pro and Max both run scorching hot, especially in selective yellow (which generates heat on the lens) that snow shouldn’t be an issue. These will be far higher performing than the halogens, and selective yellow is a more ideal color in poor weather conditions. But they will cost more than a halogen solution. This might help some. The H11 TRD halogens are higher output intensity than the OEM LEDs. And this is using a stock bulb, you could upgrade the halogen bulb for improved output. The halogens won’t compare to the best performing LED options like the SS3 LED assemblies, but they are a very decent performing fog on their own and a small step up in output intensity performance from the OEM LED fogs.

Your linked thread is really useful. I do prefer LEDs in general, and I do like yellow fogs in bad weather, so I'll give the SS3s a look.

 

I ran the Morimoto LED fogs and didn't have an issue with those and accumulation. Formerly from MI, I really didn't have any more of an issue with LED lights that with halogens with ice and snow build up. There will be a point where the heat generated just won't be enough to clear accumulation. IMO, if you like the LED, and they work for you, I'd keep them instead of taking the downgrade for something that happens once or twice a year.

 

Just want to mention that my 2021 TRD OR came with the H16 fogs, not the H11 version. Not sure when that changed but I was able to find some H11 housings to swap out.

 

That change occurred for US TRD trucks in the 2020 model year.

16-19 US TRD Tacomas: H11
16-current US non-TRD Tacomas: H16
16-current Canadian Tacomas (all): H16
*Except trucks equipped with LED fogs

 

If there is an accumulation that the SS3 Maxes won't melt off nobody (including reindeers) should be out in it.
