    HEY ALL
I understand open cooler on Beer... most of my camping has been base camping with boyscouts or backpacking again with boyscouts. With this group do we set up a base camp and then go wheeling, come back to the base or do we camp pack up go wheeling then set up camp again? Also Radios uhf/vhf or gmrs/frs?

Thanks Trying to judge how and what I should pack.

    Sid
Looking forward to meeting new friends

It's a base camp. Go wheeling and work our way back to camp.
I think there is a race going on in Johnson Valley Saturday. We might need to find a quiet channel. There is usually cell at camp or at least on top of the near small hill.

Normally setup camp on Fri, trail runs on Sat, back to camp for more beer and dinner that afternoon.
But, who knows what we'll do on this alternate trip. Some may head home on Sat afternoon. I'll decide that day, based on the temps.

As for radios, I just use the baofang handheld. Someone will pick a freq on Sat that we'll all use on the trails.

I may or may not join you guys in sw. The heat has me on the fence though.

If a miracle occurred and the forests do open up at midnight tonight would there be any interest in still going up to Big Bear? I don’t know if they’d reopen San G campground but I have some great, large yellow posts I can go reserve for us tomorrow.

It looks like the forest is opening on Thursday but not San G. They're keeping City Creek/ Alder creek closed as well as San Sevaine near Lytle Creek.

Definitely feel you on that, it's been cooling down in SD so been enjoying it. I would rather go up to the mountains than the desert this time of year but if everyone decides on SW then I don't mind settling.

Personally I don’t mind not going to the campground, I’ve never been a big fan of spending money to sleep in a tent lol. I only do it to see everyone and do the event. I just want them to open the forests again so that way we have some cooler options to go to
same here! I don’t even mind driving up north a little bit if it means cooler temperatures. As long as I’m cool and can get a decent amount of trail time in I’ll be happy

Ok, for anyone who missed it, we will be camping at these coords: 34.64747256485842, -117.12853369458277
I'll be headed up from SD about 12pm on Fri, eta 2:30pm. We'll have a small caravan coming up the 15. DM me if you want to tag along.

Sounds like fires are permitted (I've never been to SW), so at least that's a plus.
Maybe we hit Slash X on Sat for a cold-one and burger, if they're open. If @BLKTRUCK says it's good, I know it must be.

Whoever gets there first. This is the camp spot that I would recommend. Google gets you close. Black circle is the camping area. The blue area is the surrounding hill. It's a cool little cove if someone isn't there already. Plus you can crawl the trails around camp if you get bored.

I feel you on all that. The one thing that is nice about the forest service campgrounds is the bear boxes. I like them because you can throw stuff in there and toss a lock on it while you're out wheeling.

True. Big Bear usually isn’t too bad in the thief/animal department from what I’ve seen. Just don’t be a pig with crap tons of food spread all over camp. I did some camping in August near Clarke’s Grade and we left the cooler and a bunch of other food items out in just bags and nothing got messed with

I'd much rather deal with the heat than the fucking stupid wind that develops out there that ruins most of my camping trips as the weather starts to cool off in the deserts
