Just go off-road with 5ft bed . Slap a roof top tent on it . Camper shells are expensive and leak still .

The 2022 trail edition is a 4x4 sr5 with rear locker (best offroad upgrade). Wrap it green.

SR5 is a great truck and reliable...had them since the 80's. Now with a locker? had to think why anyone would need more truck.

Agreed i dont have the rear locker and my truck does just fine but the main difference from sr5 to offroad was the ability to lock rear. I think its cool they offer it now for the lower level cuz not everyone needs crawl control

It really depends on how much off-roading you plan on doing. The long bed can be a huge disadvantage in some angles. As for a locker, you do not need one. A winch is fine for just in case situations, but I personally have never needed either and ive done quite a bit of off-roading, but nothing technical.

These are my thoughts on the bed size.

Had my truck 4 years now. When I bought i had little option because I wanted a double cab and manual transmission. That meant 5 foot box. So that's what I got.

Over the four years I have thrown a few things into the box that were definitely oversized. Lumber, camping gear, appliances... any time I thought that a 6 foot box would have been better quickly disappeared because what I was hauling wouldn't have fit into a 6 foot box either.

As for parking, box size rarely makes a difference, it is the width in some of the narrow parking spots found in under grounds and Impark lots where they want to cram as many vehicles in as possible. I do my best to avoid these. Park and ride and Skytrain downtown would be way better.

Now for trails, if you are sticking to main FSR then box size won't matter too much, it will start being a factor once you turn off to the paths less traveled, over grown and tight turns, washouts and dead ends. You would be suprised how 1 foot in length can come into play turning around in a goat path dead end. This is where a friend, 2wd, a tow strap and heavy throttle can get you out of a jam.

    Welcome to Tacoma World :hattip:

And good luck with you decision.

Edit: as for locker, I have had several 4x4ing in the past. Only one had a locker of sorts ( a spool ) and yes I admit it made that vehicle unstoppable off road but my other vehicles didn't have lockers and I still went a lot of amazing places without. Yes they do help in certain situations but the Tacoma is pretty good as a base and picking a different line can help a lot too. Ultimately it will depend on how hard-core you plan on going off road.

I am happy with my TRD Sport.

I was able to deliver my 42'' lawn tractor to my brother by putting it in my 6' bed...it just fit perfect like it was made for the truck to carry...with the tailgate up.

Definitely get the long bed. wish the 21 Pro came with the long bed. That 1 foot of extra space is always needed.

I drive a full size F150 at work and never have parking issues.

I drove a 2001 tundra that was similar in size to a tacoma long bed....never once had a parking issue, and that truck took a parking lot to turn a circle. If you can't park a tacoma, you don't belong behind the wheel of one.

The SR5 TE just seems odd to me, it is a lower trim level than the Sport/Off Road but is more expensive than them.

I have driven some of the largest vehicles legally around on the roads around here without special permit. And on some of the roads that are so narrow the wheels are on paint on both sides. Parking a Tacoma is not an issue until the parking lot is a sardine can for maximum capacity and there are idiots who don't care about their vehicles let alone yours. I prefer not to park in these areas. Personal preference.

Yes it's odd. I'd rather see Toyota add a rear locker to the SR SX access cab 4x4 V6. Upgrade the front buckets to the black SR-5 buckets, remove the jump seats, and add fog lights.

I have an ACLB Sport. It works great offroad, stock. The sway bar had to go for comfort though. It was harsh on road and off.

Camping and wheeling in it is easy and wonderful.

Be sure to try the AC rear seats. I fit well, as do my daughters. Folks are often surprised by the amount of space back there.

Both the AC and LB give you the opportunity to haul a lot of stuff.

In the winter, once a week or once every other week.
    In the summer, probably none.

Drive is usually 1-2 hours for snowboard trips. My friends are around 5' to 6', like the tacomas, but I'd imagine the slightest discomfort would be magnified during those hour-long drives.

this configuration is available. It most likely isn’t in stock and may not show up in your area, but it is possible.[/QUOTE]
In BC Canada? How can I get that if it isn't stock?

-I daily mine, off road, and I'm building it up to be able to do some light jumps too. Whatever you don't spend on trim to start, is more money you can spend on upgrades later. I just dropped $3.4k on LT for my rear and another $380 on some newer better front shocks. All in all, I'll probably end up spending somewhere around 20k more (don't tell my wife!) to get the truck to a 'done' state sometime in my later years lol My end goal is mildly LT'd, rock crawling dune hopping, daily that's fun to drive in any condition. This is probably way more than you'll plan for yours.
-I tent camp out of mine as is and I've off roaded my sport stock a few weeks after purchasing it.
-My advice to you, coming into off roading for the possibly first time, is look around for parks that have a 101 course you can do, or grab a group of guys from your region's thread on TW and have them walk you through spotting and line selection. A good line means all the difference regardless of how 'built' your truck is.
-The back seat riders may not enjoy a long trip in the back, unless you are all short. I'm 6'4" so there isn't a whole lot of leg room behind me.

    (Concerns)
    1. I off road with a 6 ft bed. It can be a pain to do a 12 point turn to get around some stuff, but if you're in a rocky open area rather than the woods, its a non-issue. I managed to wheel on SxS and Jeep trails in this limo.
    2. If you plan to upgrade components anyway, just get a sport or a base model and save some money.
    3. My Double Cab Long Bed doesn't take up that much extra space when parking, parallel parking takes a bit more finesse however.
    4. Never heard about the camera? Guessing the newer ones come with front cameras? My sport has a backup camera and I'll be adding a front camera for cheap when I upgrade my headunit. :notsure:

My local grocery store recently redid the parking lot, seemed harder to park after then realized they really shrunk the width of each space.

    Check build thread!
    (my responses in italics)

    Intro
    :

I am completely new to the scene. This will be my very first truck. Was previously looking at 4runners but ultimately decided that a Tacoma is a better value for $.

    Congrats! Welcome to TacomaWorld.

    Primary Use / Need:
    - Daily driver - most of which will be around lower mainland city area.
    - Camping - I do not have plans to install a camper shell just yet, maybe in the future. No rooftop tents. For now I will get by with some ghetto low cost DIY to make things work.
    - Off road - Probably. The reason I even started looking at 4runners. I will be learning more about going off road in the future so I will need as much help as I can get from my vehicle. Especially with snow.
    - Double cab - I don't have a big family but I'm usually the designated driver for snowboard trips with my friends, so the access cab is out of the picture. Or is it..?

Yes, the Access Cab wouldn't fit you well. Double Cab would be good for you.

    Concerns:
Logically speaking a 6ft bed would be ideal for my camping needs as a sleeping area (I'm 5'11), better fit for snowboards and the rare occasional bicycle hauling (last one is not that important) but,

    1. Most people don't go off road with a 6ft bed?

Nope! Tons of us offroad with a 6ft bed. You've just gotta take it a little slower, and be a little aware that you have that extra overhang.

    2. I will be missing out on the MTS / Crawl / rear locker with the Sport Premium trim since that's the only other option? I'm aware that I can still get all that on the access cab but I'll have to strap my friends in the truck bed.

The only thing that I'd care about here is the rear locker, but if you don't mind doing some aftermarket work, you can get a rear locker added and it'll be way better than the offroad version- from a offroad owner. MTS and Crawl Control are cool, but not a "need" per say. If I had been able to find a ACLB in sport for a better price, I'd own one.

    3. This will still be a daily driver so I'm worried about parking in the city area with the 6ft.

I wouldn't worry too much. It'll be a little bit harder, but you'd get used to it so quick you won't realize it.

    4. You'd imagine that the multi / pano view camera would be more useful on a 6ft bed, but that's exactly what I'll be missing out too on the Sport Premium. All in all that's a lot of features to be missing out on for that extra 1 ft bed.

Now... that's a question only you can answer. My answer? You can always add leather, a 360 degree camera, and better speakers in the aftermarket, but you can't exactly add a foot of bed to your truck.

So I guess it ultimately comes down to... juuuuuust how important is that 1 ft bed exactly.

    Thoughts?

I'd get the 6ft bed. You can add nearly anything like leather, a 360 degree camera, and better speakers in the aftermarket, but you can't stretch your truck a foot longer lol.
