I’m really happy with KDMax tune, (thanks to PapaRee). Been listening to a podcast about running ethanol in newer vehicles….. cleaner in the engine and more octane. Is this taboo with the tune ? Has anyone tested ? Don’t want to ruin a good thing it was just wondering…… podcast is “ Under the hood”

The most percentage of ethanol you can run in your Tacoma is 15%. Most gas now days contains up to 10% ethanol because it is mandated by the government. For many reasons pure gas is best but it is hard to find. My opinion is that ethanol is for drinking, gasoline is for running your truck. Even though modern vehicles have been updated to handle some ethanol, it mixes with water and can introduce it into your gas tank, it is bad for seals and other parts of your engine, and generates less power (energy) than gasoline. Octane is just fuels resistance to igniting and higher octane is needed in high compression engines to prevent preignition. That is the only reason that alcohol it is used in top fuel dragsters. What you want is the lowest octane that will allow you to run full out without preignition. My 2 cents is to do what you can to keep alcohol out of your gas tank.

I’ve been driving with the @TWTaco tune since the beginning of august now. I have put well over 10,000 miles on the truck with it. The week after I flashed it I went on a 7,000+ mile road trip to get a GFC camper installed in Montana.

I had OV tune the last version of it before it switched over to VF tuner. The TW tune on VF blew my mind with how good it was.

so smooth compared to stock and even OV tune.
The removal of the governor is by far my favorite part. (All testing over speed limits was done on a closed course.)
Without the GFC I could hit 115 easily. It was so nice to not have the abrupt feeling of hitting the brakes every time the truck approached 95mph. with the camper installed it still will hit 110. Although it is nowhere near as spirited in getting there.

Every decision the transmission makes now is logical. No more gear hunting.
I have had one or two weird things happen that I was curious if anyone else experienced. I am nowhere near as caught up on this thread as I have been on some of the other tuning threads in the past, so I apologize in advance if this has been discussed. Also, none of these weird issues have happened since the first 1,000 miles on the tune.

weird issue one: OK, this one happens on OVtune occasionally as well. It’s only happened once on this tune.
Sometimes, normally on the freeway, if you are going around 50-65 mph and you slow down and then hit the gas again abruptly it feels almost like you have been rear ended. Reminds me of an old school high stall drag torque converter kicking in, and scares the hell out of everyone in the vehicle. Only happened once and then never again with this tune.

This other issue also only happened once.
The first time I used cruise control (which works like a dream now compared to stock and OVtune. It’s actually usable.) I was in the mountains. The truck was in 4th gear heading uphill and it kept accelerating in 4th gear well past redline. Accelerated so far past redline that I switch cruise control off and tapped the brakes. It did a bunch of weird shit at that point and then returned to normal. It never happened again.

what I will say is that above redline this engine turned into an LS1. It was so freaking responsive for that brief moment that I almost wish there was a way to replicate it on demand.

more on cruise control: it is amazing now. I never used it before this tune and almost forgot it was a thing that existed.

Thanks for reply, the podcast duo works out of the Dakota’s ( good corn land) so they might have more reasons to push for the use of ethanol ……. I’ve ran 91 OVT 2.0 and now 87 KDMax. Not a huge power difference, but I’m on flat land most of the time.

Easily the best mod I've done on mine as far as bang for the buck and and actual added performance/improvement. Hopefully you can get it done soon!

Still not out yet from Ovtune.
He did say recently that he wasn't doing tunes anymore, just making the software better for us to do it.
Great question! I love driving my truck with the KDMax tune.
Only thing missing is map switching. Map switching is not available and I am not sure that it ever will be.
Personally, I do not need it.

Keep us posted if any of the issues you had happen again. May have only happened once but seems like a big deal to me.

Question, maybe it's been answered before so my appologies. I updated my tune in April and I'm looking at upgrading my gears in the near future, would I need to have my tune updated as well? Just wondering. Thanks

Yes. When you change gears, we have to change the tune.
You can run it without changing tunes (Many stock trucks out there with gears), it will not hurt anything.
But there is a setting in VFtuner that allows the new gears to be added in the tune and allows the algorithm to use the new setting for shifting.

gears have nothing to do with your Speedo/odo

and no tune can correct that either way. Look up the hypertech calibrator

Gears have everything to do with the speedometer and odometer as do larger tires. They will both will be off or inaccurate if you change either. Whether or not that could be corrected with a tune setting was the question.

The Tacoma ECU cannot correct the speedometer and odometer.
The KDMax tune (nor any tune) cannot correct the speedometer and odometer.
