What exactly does this added oil cooler look like that comes with the factory tow package on my 08? I want to see if I have this or not.

That makes sense because that is where most after market systems go. But now why is the oil cooler under the filter and how good is that cooler? Seems like it wouldn't work as well.

If it's an automatic you'll have two one for the engine oil (under the red filter) and one for the trans (in front of the A/C condenser).

The engine oil cooler is a water to oil cooler not a traditional air to oil cooler. I have two Yamaha bikes with this system, works fine.

Anybody have a picture of the oil cooler off the truck, or just with their oil filter off?

These things are $500+ and toyotapartssales.com. I am wondering if my machinist in-laws can make me a heat exchanger (the t-stat housing is under $100).

Engine oil. I assume it's kind of just a water jacket that oil flows through, but I've never seen one without a filter or off the vehicle.

    Lots baby!

Engine oil runs about 210 ~215 degrees F.

Radiator coolant runs about 184 degrees F.

Factory oil cooler circulates coolant through the heat exchanger that sets under the oil filter. The cooler water lowers the higher oil temp.

Look on ebay. They pop up for sale from time to time.

    Yes.
Beyond the additional oil capacity gained, do you think the 4.0L would benefit from an additional, more traditional, Oil to Air cooler in line? Adding oil is usually beneficial in most systems, and the additional cooler would likely add almost a quart between lines and the cooler itself.

I know of some guys that have gone this way. I would say the important item would be to get a model that has a thermostat. This way it won't circulate until the oil warms up.
