I'd probably fail visual on the uni filter on the sais (that will go back to stock easily). But nothing else visual will fail.

But like linked to, ECU software checksum is the problem.

Also... Stock tune, ewwwwww, how'd I ever drive the truck like this before

This may be a stupid question, but if my ecu is flashed with the dealership TRD s/c tune, is there any reason that I couldn't tune it later with HP Tuners? or does HP need an unmodified ecu?

All of this should be a non factor, as the Toyota PCM is a "read only" type PCM. HPT does not modify any vital information when it does reflashes. Only the parameters you modified. Even if it was an issue, the fact that you have some sort of reflash present should mean literally nothing. They have no way to know if that flash was done at the dealer or not since they want to try and be intricate with the way their software will check PCMs. Since you have a 2013, your PCM was a candidate and valid for reflash at the time of purchase to now for the TSB update of SAI engage strategy at the dealer and that's just the one I can think of offhand amongst the myriad of other reflash updates they had.

Also, the stock tune sucks.

the TRD tune is the preferred base for the HP tunes. so good to go.

    Mods? Yes, oh yes..
as long as your calibration ID matches a factory one, yer good. That's all that can be read is CID and VIN.

Unfortunately that does not seem the case any more. Back in the day yes, all the SMOG check place would look for is "is this ecu a stock ecu by the CAL ID#". They are now checking a "CVN". The CVN is a checksum number provided by the OEM that was calculated for a specific ecu with a specific calibration id with a specific tune. If any flashable data is different on a specific ecu with a specific cal id, the calculated CVN spit out by the ecu will also be different and you will fail smog.

My 2013 ECU has been flashed by toyota WAY back in the day for the one and only ecu flash available for my truck (a knock tsb). But toyota will have a CVN for that cal/ecu combo as well as the previous original cal.

Now has it been implemented fully, its CA so likely no, though its emissions and money grabbing which is right up CA's alley so likely yes.

Needless to say, the risk of failing and getting flagged in the system for trying to test if a tune is detectable aint worth my time, not when going back to the stock tune is a 5 min task and a week or two of driving around like normal to complete a drive cycle or two.

Is there a way to check this cvn value and if its assigned to pass with the truck that its matched up too? All without triggering something in their system that will require me to go to a CARB BAR station to get referee'd.

I read in a 3rd gen thread where one of them (CA resident) smogged recently and passed with a custom VFTuner thing. It had me confident about smogging without reverting back to stock, but I'm not so sure again after what you wrote. I'm due in November.

a couple of the VF tuning companies or what have it have been doing it every few months to keep up with the claim that it will pass. Seeing that helped with my confidence since I would assume the newer ones would have more doors open for them to validate this stuff.

Truck will ride rough for some time if we need to flashback but I guess it works if needed.

I mean, there is always the option of a "pre-test" which you can request at most smog stations.

It's done just like the official test but there is no penalty for failure.

I believe that the CVN can been seen from techstream, Ill have to see if i can pull it in my stock form, then after smog when i go back to off road full time and flash my off road only tune ill see if at that point the CVN is different.

Ill keep you guys updated as i dont believe anyone here in this thread has had to do CA smog cert on an HPTuned 2nd gen taco.

    Whelp bois.....

I passed SMOG! Pulled my Uni filter on my SAIS pump and put stock back, undid an extra ground I have to the TB and wrapped that up by the battery (to pass visual stuffs), and passed all OBD computer checks. Whether or not the CVN check was implemented yet or not, I dont know, I didnt ask as I didnt want to raise any flags but they have had 8 something years of collecting CVN's, implementing the database and updating software on the BAR OIS so Id bet it was checked.

Im going to see if i can find the CVN via techstream and see if that changes when i go back to driving off road only and put my off road only tune back on.

Nice! Next time I head back to visit family I’ll have my brother check. His shop has a smog station. If I can do a check then should be easy.
