Solid Axle Swap BS Thread

    They work. A different box may offer a little more turning though and be stronger. The big bore psc box from a tj that I’m using is probably almost to big as I can hear the psc pump whining when the front is locked under hard steering.

    I do notice the steering is easier with the bigger box vs the older Toyota box I had.

    I appreciate you sharing these other steering box options. Never really thought about it since most people use the toyota boxes. I've seen a couple of builds with Ford boxes...even a guy who managed to squeeze a Ford F250 in there and made it work somehow. That thing looked massive lol

    Appreciate the options. I did already order frame plates for an IFS box, not that it would be hard to modify. If I can source a cheap IFS box and rebuild/drill/tap i'll try to go that route...if i have to spend $500+ for a leaky TG box i'll definitely be looking into other options.

    The tg box is good. It’s just that any Toyota ifs box you use is pretty small compared to the newer boxes and even smaller compared to the big bore stuff psc sells.

    You figure a Toyota ifs box was meant to turn 29-31 in tires and here we are turning 40s locked pushing it into rocks. They work. Just prone to leakage in my experience. Way better options now a days and modifying frame plates is easy if your doing the sas work yourself. Such a small detail in the grand scheme of things.

    and used Toyota parts seem to be like gold right now. Not sure if it’s because a lot of them burned up in the fire in Northern California last year or what but I sold a leaky tg steering box for 350 and a non leaky non tapped one for 300 so keep that in mind.

    but I also paid a real pretty penny for my ised tj psc big bore box too. It’s all a five or take.

    Anything is massive compared to the ifs box. When you start looking at other rigs the ifs box is tiny.

    You can buy a Toyota IFS box from a salvage yard (many are under $100 on car-part.com), throw a $25 rebuilt kit at it and call it good. The same IFS boxes that were used on 4X4 Pickups and 4Runners were also used on 4x4 T100s, to help expand your search.

    That's a good point LOL. Hydro assist makes a big difference. But you are right, using toyota IFS boxes to turn 40" plus tires is a lot to expect of boxes designed to turn small tires to begin with.

    That's good. When I was looking 5-6 years ago, I had a hard time finding one. Over the years they seem to have gotten harder to find.

    My TG pump cost $350 I think. At that price point, at the time it made sense to me to buy it since it was rebuilt, drilled/tapped and ready to go. The one they sent had issues, but they replaced it quickly with another one.

    Now the TG boxes are two hundred dollars more seems like. So that alone would persuade me to find a used one, rebuild it and tap/drill it myself instead. There are videos online showing you exactly how/where to do tap/drill.

    Building around 37's w/ hydro assist, picking up a box after work today for $125. For the price it's worth a shot.

    Heck yea. Do it on the cheap is always good haha.

    I think having a big pump and reservoir is key. Buddy of mine did hydro assist with 37"s and was never happy happy with it. Then upgraded to a bigger pump/reservoir and it made a huge difference.

    I have a PSC pump/reservoir in mine.

    Completely agree with this. I will be going with a PSC pump/larger reservoir. I killed a stock 3rz pump pretty quick with 37's on my last rig, PSC pump made a huge difference (with IFS box as well).

    I'm on 40"s and the system does very well.

    BTW, I've seen more and more people using the Howe Performance steering products. Apparently they are preferred over PSC. Something to consider.

    I'll definitely check Howe out. I'm in part collection mode for a 2000 4runner SAS (FJ80 front, hellfire knuckles, 4wu kit, 37s). Plan is spring under for the rear to keep this thing low. Likely the PNFab ecobox as i already have the chain case, to gear driven passenger drop case. Seems like a lot of good knowledge here...i'll update here as i go so you guys can tell me where i'm screwing up.

    Has anyone ran full hydro and can give me some real world advise?

    I just bought the 4WU 3 link to hold this boat anchor D60 (2013 F350) under the truck and it’s time to dive into steering. I was originally planning on a full hydro setup with a generic PSC ram. Idea was making the truck a pure trailer queen but am starting to lean more towards trailer queen that can cruise 60mph to local mall crawl meetups. Obviously full hydro isn’t street legal but chatted with a couple folks who do it on their Jeeps anyway, but also read it’s extremely squirrelly which could be dangerous. Just want to do it right the first time and don’t want to kick myself in the future if I go hydro assist.

    35s, flatbed, rhino liner paint, SOS front bumper, JD Fab lca pivot, JD Fab inner fenders and some other stuff.
    I had full hydro on a 93 Toyota with full sized axles and 40s. I wouldn't go over 35 mph because it was way too squirrelly. I shortened my steering arms and I know this didn't help my case but in my experience there was no way I could get anywhere close to 65 mph. Hope this helps.

    Has anyone on here done an SAS with Rubicon axles? I have a waggy 44 lined up but i'm highly considering using the JK Rubicon axles for a few reasons. E lockers front/rear, 65.5 wms width, HP. Unfortunately there's a shit ton of brackets that would need to come off and alot of axle prep, but they seem to be a good option.

    If you get the axles for a good price, why not? As you said, they have elockers, high pinion and the right width. Toyota purists might give you crap though lol.

    Here in AZ there are literally hundreds (not kidding) of JKs on 37”s and 40”s on the trails at any given time. With 40”s you want to truss those axles for sure. I’ve wheeled with many of the JK guys. Have to admit, those JKs on 3-link suspensions are quite capable. If you are a good driver, those axles will withstand a lot of abuse.

    Mind you, I wouldn’t spend a lot of money on those axles. But if you have a bargain in front if you…go for it!
