I don’t really stomp valve stems but I have been known to unplug a tail light or two. After leaving a truck unattended, always do a walk around light check in any area that I may be operating in. This should be taught in drug dealer school. I always read about people getting pulled over for an inoperable tail light and getting caught with drugs.

Okay, story time...

When I was a kid, I used to spend my summers with my maternal grandparents. I may have mentioned before that they were both born before New Mexico was even a state.

My grandpa had never been to school and couldn't read, write or do math. But I loved him dearly. He was 63 when I was born and a bit on the demented side but a very good guy. He and Grandma lived in a cave and herded goats for a living until my mom was born and they moved into town. I've explored that cave. It still smells like goat shit to this day.

Anyway, every morning he would sit in the kitchen and have 3 or 4 pots of coffee to start his day. Not modern, Mr. Coffee pots. But good, old-fashioned cowboy coffee from the stove. While he drank it, he would tell me stories from his past. Actually, he was just talking to himself and I happened to be there to listen. He'd talk about things like the time him and Papa were hauling freight and the wheel on the wagon broke, or the hog he slaughtered, the horse that threw him off a cliff or whatever popped into his mind. I loved those stories. He literally lived from horse and buggy days to space shuttles.

Now I find myself telling my grandkids about rotary dial phones that had to stay attached to the house. Cars with no air conditioning, air bags or seat belts. The hardships of cooking without a microwave oven. Killing time on trips by counting phone poles and playing "I Spy".

I can't even imagine the stories they'll be able to tell their grandkids.

Okay, need more coffee...

That reminded me of the time when I was living in Corpus Christi. We were coming home to NM to visit. It was hotter than hell. Somewhere in West Texas we passed this big windfarm. My son was around 8 at the time. He asked me "What are those things?" I said "They're fans. The rancher had to put them in to keep his cows cooled off."
My wife gave me "The Look".
