I have some rust spots on my frame (2012) that I was planning to fix by using a wire cup brush on my angle grinder to remove the rust, re-paint, and then spray with fluid film. I should note that I had the Toyota CRC recall completed a few years ago. Seem like a reasonable plan? Any other advice?

When I used the wire cup brush I was surprised how shiny the metal was. I thought the Tacoma frame was just mild steel. Any idea why its so shiny? See links below for a couple photos.

    Thanks.

It's normal, just remember to treat it and seal it immediately so you don't get surface rust. I highly recommend Duplicolor Bed Armor Liner, it can take a beating and protects the frame. Wire wheels are also used to add a brushed polished finish to metal, brush stainless, brushed aluminum, ect. usually followed by a clear coat finish.

I would use Ospho rust nuetrilizer, Eastwood primer followed by Eastwood black chassis paint. I would skip fluid film washes away to easily .Easwood makes an internal frame protector spray with a 360 spray pattern highly recommend. I use Amsoil heavy duty metal protector . G.L. Winter is coming.

I'd be more concerned about the spots up top, you might have some further damage. That's about where my 2010 let go this year and reframe was done.

I would use POR-15, just knock off the loose rust first. The POR-15 needs light rust to work. Make sure gloves are used.

I have the same problem with my TSB frame. Like the last post, a Toyota tech recommended I use POR-15
