Interesting. Been chasing a wheel bearing noise for a couple months now. Fronts seem fine, changed them out last year.
Noise went away when i changed diff fluid the other night so i went to put in my spare 3rd member and found that.

So ya think that might be causing a grinding noise when turning left?

This might be the bearing that goes in that housing sub assembly.

Well if gear oil made it go away I’d be wondering if it’s a diff issue.. that bearing shouldn’t be touching gear oil (unless the axle seals failed)

yeah it looks like the diff oil is on the bearing. Thats bad news. It'll ruin your bearing as they are sealed and all the grease will disappear and then boom goes the bearing.

    Is it wet with oil?

I cant remember if it was diff oil, but there was definitely grease between the bearing and axle seal. With empty saying its a little excessive play i think ill go ahead and replace them, I have a spare diff if it decides to start making noises again.

While axles are fresh in everybody's mind...

Are the axles and bearing/brake assemblies the same between open and e-locker axles? Both axles have the above-leaf-spring parking brake design.

If I pull the axles out of the housing, is it safe re-use the o-rings between the housing and the bearing/brake assembly if they're in good condition? I believe they're part #90301-88077. Here's a photo lifted from @turbodb 's bearing replacement writeup.

    Awesome!

The main difference is abs, vs non abs. All elocker axles housings are the abs design, even if not equipped with abs.

I would replace if it's original. It's purpose is to keep dust, water, mud out.

As stated, the ABS is the factor. So really only open diffs with NO ABS have different parts.

Axle shafts and bearings also changed between 95-00 and 01-04.

Edit: you could swap them between housings and baking ates, but the bearings need to match the shafts.

I'm cleaning up some corrosion on the axle housing, and I think it will be easier to do with the axle/brake assembly removed. It looks like that's the only seal I'll need to touch.

Ah right, I forgot about the ABS provisions on the e-locker axle. Neither axle is ABS-equipped, but it makes sense that the internals would be different to accommodate the ABS option on the e-locker.

Good to know. The truck's a '98 and it's getting an axle from an '02, so I'll have to keep that in mind in case I ever need to rebuild the axle.

Not worth a new thread, what/where does this go?

I suspect in a front wheel well, but I may be wrong. It has 3 threaded studs and a stamped ‘hook’.

It is in my bin of ‘extra’ parts with a bunch of water/mud flaps from when I replaced the DS inner fender/radiator mount 5-6 years ago.

Wiring from battery/engine compartment and into a 7-pin plug completed, plus an ACC line from center console, to use a 20amp DC-DC charge controller for my tiny house on wheels.
