Driving in snow with a 17 TRD Off Road 4x2

Hey everyone. So I moved here earlier on in the year and with my trd 4x2 as I never needed 4wd where I lived.

I see a few of the same trucks around and have posted in Reddit and got some helpful advice and was told you all could give a better insight.

Just wondering what I should expect with driving in the snow and any advice is appreciated! I live in the Littleton area. I know good tires and some weight in the back will help and I’m a pretty cautious driver as i do it alot for work. I also thought about seeing how this winter plays out and come spring look into trading it in for a 4x4. Thank you in advance for help!

Slow and steady, change lanes slightly more gradually, brake early and softly, give yourself extra space, avoid jerky movements if possible and brake well before turns in the straight away and then coast through the turn and accelerate gradually on your way out. Snow tires are huge but if you can’t afford them or just don’t want to spend the money you can get by just fine without them, weight is good (use sand bags/gravel or lava rock as they can be cut open and dumped in front of your tires for traction in a pinch). 4wd definitely helps in the snow but mainly for keeping you from getting stuck from a standstill or on an incline or if you start skidding out in a turn you went into a little too hot. Some say slightly better braking. For day to day for most driving you’ll be just fine with 2wd. Plus although the front range gets snow it’s kinda rare it’s a massive dump and it usually melts fairly quickly. One big storm hit last winter and it pretty much shut things down. There’s loads of 2wd vehicles out there and has been for a long time. Yer gonna do great!

Edit: also maybe throw some chains or cables in the truck just in case.

 

Going into mountains Chains are required by law for non- 4x4 trucks. Put some weight in the bed and think about snow tires to use until you gain snow driving experience.

My tip: Shovel your snow into your pickup bed. You get free added weight for traction and it melts away when the snow is gone so no need to empty the bed.

Bonus: Free beer cooler!

 

Are snow is very dry (we put the Pow in powder ) and basically this adds little weight and blows out with wind, back in mid-west & east this works.

Not a great idea. I sold my 4x2 4Runner after one winter of living in CO. Moved here from TX

 

Keep in mind 4x4 doesn't do anything to help you stop which is what I'm usually more concerned about, so how you drive and what tires you choose will make the most impact on that.

 

One of the silliest things I've seen in my time living in CO was a Mustang that couldn't even get out of the parking lot at Abasin spinning its tires without a prayer.

 

Actually when your in 4x4 it does change the ratio of braking power front and back, McNeil rally on YouTube did a test and 4x4 stopped quicker in snow.

Get winter tires, way better than any all season or AT tire.

I've owned a 2005 M3 for 7 years, only took one time driving over a icy bridge to make it a summer only car lol

 

I have a neighbor that drives a new Camaro that I have seen struggling to get up the hills in my neighborhood a few times. Low profile tires are useless in the winter.

He doesn’t have a 4x4 hence his questions. You’re kind of like the guy I once saw sliding into a ditch on southern icy roads because he thought his 4x4 could save him from anything. I was driving a little light weight Corolla at the time as I drove by.
