A couple of weeks ago while prepping for a trip I found some sidewall damage on one of my old 255/85 16 STMaxx. I had wanted to do Toyo MT's next but they wouldn't have come in time so I rolled the dice on these 255/85 16 Falken Wildpeak MT01's. So far they aren't any louder than my old Coopers were with 8/32nds tread depth (they had just hit that point where they get louder). Anyway I immediately put 2,300k miles on them on a trip to Colorado, not bad on the highway and pretty great on the dirt. Thumbs up so far, will have to see how long they last.

Do you have any rubbing with those? I have 17” wheels, but have 255/75s and am wondering if I should make the move to 255/80

None, and when the STMaxx were first installed the truck was at stock height. Seems like rubbing issues have more to do with tire width and wheel offset than with height.

Dang, good to hear.. I only have about 5000 on mine right now. Wishing ai had just pulled the trigger on the 255/80s instead but was worried about possible rubbing

Womp, been nervous about how an MT will perform in the winter up here but the tread seems similar to the wildpeak ATs I'm running now so I'm hoping they're in the ballpark of those

Am I just a noob who doesn't know any better? Or was the damage worse than the pic makes it look? Based on what I'm seeing I would not have ran out and replaced those tires.

I just got the Wildpeak MT01 in 255/85/16. I live in Madison, WI. So I can let you know how they are once winter rolls around.

Normally I would have run them a little while longer, but I wasn't going to head out over 1k miles from home on it.

I visited Hollister Hills today and found a lot of rubbing under flex and certain turning conditions. Mainly drivers side.
I haven't decided with which suspension pieces to go with yet but now I have more pressure to just pull the trigger. Forcing function :)

It'll be fine in deep powder and slush and less so on ice or hard pack. Tread is less important than siping, which MT generally have less or none of

I have had 2 sets of the ST Maxx’s and three sets of the AT3W’s. I feel the AT3W’s are quite a bit better for winter driving conditions. I will either get another set of the same next spring or try the new Toyo 255’s.

I hand siped my Toyo MT 255’s, just the centre treads, it made a massive difference! I had made a 2000km trip with snowy conditions for 3/4 of it, promptly went and picked up a tire groover and got at it. I wouldn’t recommend it though, the tires seemed to dry rot in the centre area over the winter. I did buy a 2nd set of these also but wouldn’t buy them again.

I now have my tires siped whenever I buy new ones. It is my work truck for the bush and I'm replacing tires every two years anyways, so a little additional wear isn't an issue.

Guy at the tire shop delivering my keys after the latest new set "siped pizza cutters, you'll go anywhere this winter."

How have I not come across this forum before  I’ve been on pizza cutters for the past 6 months. Rocking 255/80r17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W. They have been a phenomenal tire on and off-road. I’ve had other Wildpeak sizes before but never a skinny and I’m actually really enjoying them. I don’t think I’ll ever swap to a wider tire, unless it’s a 35” pizza cutter. This was me eyeballing my buddies 35x10.5 Kenda Klever

Nice. Thanks for the feedback. The new Toyo in 255/80/17 look promising. Not many ratings on them yet, but the price and weight (51lb/tire) look good. Decent looking winter capabilities too.
