What is "normal" 4.0L timing cover leakage? Dilemma

    I know that there are many threads on the 4.0L timing cover leak issue. I am just probably just being anal but I have a slight seep from timing cover area stated in the TSB for the timing cover leak on my 2006 DC. The leak is very slight. Since I read the TSB I have kept an eye on it. Now at 50,xxx miles I have noticed a little, I mean very very slight seep where I have to wipe my finger on the leaky area and it just leaves a little oily/diry residue on my finger. BTW I am running AMSOIL 0w-30 full syn oil. I don't know if I should take it to the stealership and let them have it for days and probably screw up, dent, and scrach other things in the process to fix the leak. I could let it go for now but the 60k mile powertrain warranty will be up in less than 10k. I don't want to overlook something that is in warranty now that I could risk it leaking a shit ton outside of warranty. I don't even know if the stealership will consider it "normal sweating" and not cover it? For you that have had the TSB done was your timing cover leaking bad ie: dripping on the gound or just enough to make some dirt collect on the seeping spot or somewhere in between? What to do? I will try to get some pics up this weekend. Thanks

    Has it gotten worse than when you first noticed it? If so I would just take it in.

    Well, there is nothing "normal" about oil seeping through RTV sealant. I had that happen on my old 22R. The RTV sealing the oil pan broke down. It got worse over time. Don't let it get out of warranty, it's very expensive to fix on your dime. Guys on here have posted that it's a 1500 dollar job, everything on the front of the engine has to come off, plus the valve covers. I hear you on letting the dealer screw with your truck, but you have to act or it's gonna be your money spent later.

    S.B., Just really noticed a few days ago. Thinking about degreaseing it down so it is clean and see how long it takes for it to look wet again that will give me an idea of the leak rate.

    That's just weeping. Keep an eye on it and keep it clean, it should be fine.

    Well after looing at some pics of a "real" leak I do not feel that bad. I have about 10k left on powertrain warranty. I will watch it like a hawk. I would like to see some more pics of the leaking timing cover. If you have some post them up. Thanks

    As a tech I personally wouldn't even give that a second thought. If it doesn't form a drip it wouldn't be considered a leak. Especially for a warranty repair lol. (I don't work at a dealer but I have in the past)

    We always considered wet (dripping or not) a leak for warranty purposes. For older cars not on warranty potentially a "don't worry about it" would be passed. I only abide any leak on a british car, and even then only because I have tried to stop them.. its impossible. And the mercedes I6 timing cover leak takes far too much work just to fail again.


    That's not to say I wouldn't leave a minor seep on a car out of warranty.. But On warranty.. I'd get it replaced if at all possible. Leaks almost always get bigger as the oil fouls the gasket faces. Bringing in mine wednesday for a wet gasket on the oil pan. Hoping to be successful in replacing it, or I'll do it myself next oil change.

    I was looking through the second gen section the other day and I found a thread of some one with a DIY on the timing cover reseal and it had some photos. I wanted to look at it again but not I can't find it anywhere when searching. If you find it please post up a link here thanks.
