About the same approach. I make sure the seating surface is smooth and clear of knicks. I use a lot of grease on the seal surface, on the back, and on the splines so the axle splines can't pinch or damage it. I put the seals in the freezer before installation to make them easier to seat.

When I drove that part of the pass last August, I took that switchback one as a two-point.

Sprayed one coat of this on most the outside, still have 2.5 cans left.

But we all know the outside doesn’t really matter.

Good info thanks @CS_AR and @Speedytech7

So the outer edge of the seal should be flush with this raised bevel edge inside the axle tube? We measured it and that edge is 5.5mm in.

I am incredibly impressed that the occupant area of the body structure is mostly intact yet the rest of the car looks like it went through a wood chipper. The safety engineering that goes into modern vehicles still amazes me.

How is it different from regular rustoleum? Or Rustoleum primer?

Project Farm just did a big comparison on a bunch and the Professional Rustoleum came out the winner for the money. It's what I've used for years
    [IMG]

I've found it has much better abrasion resistance, and keeps it's color. I've used the $1 walmart can before in a pinch, but anything I care about not rusting, not flaking, holding up to contact, and constistent coverage gets this treatment (inclu my oil sump).

Their high heat one is great too, though working with it is a little different as it comes out more powdery for lack of better term. I coated my exhaust with it under the heat wrap, and it's probably what I'd use on anything attached to the engine block as well.

Any inclination to get it restored? (bromide yellowing fixed, etc)
