Us 2nd gen owners need a catalytic converter protector. I know of a fellow tacomaworld member named Talon2006 of Talon’s Garage who makes a cat skid cover for the 3rd gen tacomas. Its twice as thick as the aluminum the Cat shield brand uses so even that much more protection. He is willing to try and fab up one for us 2nd gen owners if he has a 2nd Gen Taco to use as a template. He is located in Houston if anyone is interested. I am in southern cali, otherwise i’d be at his shop right now. I seen his 3rd gen cat protector posted on here and it looks beefy. I am willing to shell out a few hundred dollars to save a thousand on having to buy a new cat. Not to mention just the peace of mind.

If anyone is interested, hit up Talon2006.

With that said, I know this has been discussed to death, but Catalytic converter theft is out of control. The thieves are literally in and out in 1 minute. They even strike in broad daylight now. Surprisingly there are only a few commercial deterrents for this crime.

    • Cat Clamp
    • Cat Strap
    • Cat Shield

And forget about getting a tilt sensor for our trucks because even when stock you can just slide under it without a jack. The 3 above deterrents have some downsides. As the trolls have mentioned, If a thief wants it, they will find a way. But the point of the deterrent is to make it more difficult for the thieves and hopefully cause them to just move on.

So the Cat clamp seems like a hassle to install and having to run thick metal cable around and around can’t be easy. Also the way I’ve seen it put professional on, the cables hang down a bit and the last thing i want is something to get caught on those cables as I’m driving at freeway speeds. Also on the 2nd gen tacomas we have 2 exposed cats which means we would need to buy 2.

For the Cat Strap, the main issue is that again, you have to buy 2 of them for the 2nd gen tacomas.

The Cat Shield, which is basically a thin skid plate covers both exposed cats with one plate. This is the best deterrent design in my opinion but unfortunately they don’t make it for all 2nd gen trims. I have a 2WD and they don't make it for that.

**So again, if you are in the Houston area and are willing to let Talon2006 use your 2nd Gen as a template, hit him up.

    2010 Tacoma sport…..
Put a CAT cover on mine a few months ago, mainly because I travel and stay in hotels for work.
Picked up mine in Dallas , from manufacturer
Desert Eagle Offroad………owner is KW…….214/287-8960. He ships too.

sells to almost all Toyota dealers in Dallas and Houston, who then markup the price 100%, still cheaper than replacing CAT

3/16 steel skid but if someone wants the catalytic converter they'll get it. These skids are more to protect the transmission and transfer case.
