Has anyone ever successfully swapped from a 2.7 engine to a 3.4 in a Tacoma? I have read alot about people performing the swap in the older Toyotas, but I haven't found much information on the swap for a Tacoma. I have a 95 Tacoma with a 2.7 engine, manual transmission and I plan on installing a 3.4 engine, automatic transmission. The parts I have so far include: 3.4 engine, auto transmission, tranfer case, engine wiring harness, ecm, intake, air box, mass air flow sensor, and exhaust. What other parts will I need? And will the dash harness in my 4 cylinder Tacoma plug into the v6 ecm?

    why swap?

dont get me wrong, i admire the desire to upgrade but they make your same truck with everything you're going to be swapping. you'd probably save a little coin in selling and purchasing another taco with what you want in it....sorry to not add any useful info.

The truck I have has a blown motor and it was free. I purchased all the parts mentioned above for $600.

As it's clearly not a daily driver I say forge ahead, certainly the engine mounts and some electrical connectors will be different but that is all fairly small stuff from a scrapyard. Take some pictures as you proceed and post them here. Good Luck!!

Bumping this thread becuase my buddy took on the same swap challenge, his truck has sat for the last few months becuase wiring issues. Using 02 tundra motor and 02 tacoma auto tranny. Off a 02 Taco originially 2.7 Auto. Wondering if just easier to swap in a tundra cluster dash?

Jeremy, I just finished my 3.4 swap. I have a 99 regular cab. Installed a 3.4 and auto tranny from a 4runner. Not a diffucult swap. Had to install the V6 motor mount brackets moved back about 3/4" then welded. I was lucky and had a complete rolled 4runner and the truck with a bad motor traded for my Tin Top Samurai. I also used the 4Runner wiring harness, ABS, e-locker, 4Runner dash, seats, and console. I like the extra power of the V6, wife loves the auto tranny. My experience with the 3.4 is that it is a long lasting power plant. I'm enjoying my swap. If you need any info let me know. Good Luck.

I have a 2000 single cab 4x4 needs a frame so I know where I can get a 99 Tacoma PreRunner which I understand is the same frame. However it’s a V-6 extended cab that can not be titled from junk yard. Debating on using the v-6 or 4 cyl. The body shop is going to cut & sleeve the frame to fit single cab. Should I have the mounts moved or cut & sleeve the front as well. Or go for the v-6 since I have the entire donor truck. Keep in mind I’ll need a new trans or divorced t-case & still be running the 4cyl. Front & rear diffs.

I just performed a swap on my 2001 2.7 manual 4x4 locked tacoma. I went with a 3.4 manual transmission. I needed to replace tranny, Tcase, harness, ECU, clutch kit, flywheel, AC compressor, rear driveshaft, exhaust, air box, maf sensor, cluster, relocated engine mounts and replaced tranny mounts. If I’m forgetting something I’ll edit or post additional materials used.

I had a hard time finding an ECU and harness for a 3.4 manual Tacoma with elockers. I ended up finding one through Off-road solutions. They charged me $700 for harness and ECU shipped. That was definitely the most expensive part of my swap. Mike the salesmen sent me a wiring diagram because apparently the body harness wouldn’t be able to communicate with the ECU until re-wiring was complete. I did the rewriting as per the instructions but I’m having issues. My current issues are:
    •Speedometer isn’t marking my MPH
    •Odometer isn’t recording the miles I’m traveling
•my lockers aren’t engaging. No signal being sent to lockers.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I have done a few they are all some what different.

Your best bet is to buy a complete donor vehicle rather then one piece at a time it is always the little things that get missed.

Feel free to drop me a line with any questions .

Thanks brotha I appreciate your help. A lot of welding ? Wiring ? Kinda wanna have a heads up . I would love to keep it manual trans but I’ve noticed it’s hard to find a donor that’s a manual trans .

It depends if your a fabricator the welding is rather limited .

The merging of the wire harness scares lots of people. The best is to have the wiring diagrams of all the vehicles .

Don`t forget the 4Runners also make good donor vehicles

To be honest I was thinking of throwing a super charger on that 2.7 I don’t use it for towing . Just to take my tools for mobile job sites . I found a donor actually . Taco with trans and everything. Still on the truck 179k miles and asking 1200

Turbocharging it is a much better option. More support, more power, and cheaper in the long run.

As long as you have a good filter, you’ll be fine.

    Turbocharged 2.7L won't be as reliable as a N/A 3.4L...
