Donut Media Hi-Low Season 2 is building 1st Gens!

Been watching it, and I love it. I liked their 350z hi low series as well.

And they still have terrible seats

 

Just watched the last episode. Crazy to see the weight difference. Thought they’re overall observations were good.

only thing was they definitely did not have the e locker on low truck on for the last part and high truck was not in low range lol. No reason they both couldn’t make it up that.

Same thing I thought. Hi truck should have made it up no problem. I think they did it on purpose to use the winch.

 

Both trucks looked quite heavy with all that rear end sag. My truck didn't look like that on my cross-country trip to get my GFC, both before and after installation.

x2 on the e-locker not working and not being in low range.

The bumper getting torn off was 100% operator error. Of course if you winch in that direction you'll tear it off the truck; what a shame.

But how about having a "medium" truck?
-I would take an ARB bumper over DIY. Airbag compatibility is important in my book (I was pushed into a rock wall on the interstate at 50+ and the ARB bumper probably went a long ways towards saving my life), and the "cost" of the extra time it takes to design & weld up a bumper outweighs the ease of installing an ARB. 1st Gens don't really have many other options for plate bumpers at this point anyways; all the designs and support went to 2nd/3rd Gens.
-Skip the nerf bars and buy some cheaper sliders that actually offer protection.
-DIY rear bumper
-~$1000 front coilovers + OME rear suspension parts
-Skids optional (I do appreciate having them personally, but they are a PITA to take off and re-install.
-Keep an eye on the weight and adjust accordingly.

 

IMO Low truck was technically "medium" truck. You could have gotten cheaper tires and cheaper suspension to make it really a low budget truck.

 

Sort of, there were a few more parts it needed to be truly medium. But moral of the story is definitely, sometimes it's ok to go cheap (my knockoff light bar I use once in a blue moon) and sometimes you want nice things that you use regularly. Also, not too hard to get high parts used for low part prices new. Team Medium-truck!

 

Kind of. As I said though- I would have gone with ARB front bumper, real sliders, and slightly better suspension (not quite the tier of hi truck).

They did a good build of low truck though, I do agree.

In this episode I know the the Hi truck got a kb voodoo rack but does anyone know what the one on the Low truck got? Kind of looks like the Yakima overhaul. Im looking just for bed bars that are about that height so the tent doesn't sit above the cab.

 

Finally watched the Finale. These season was super short but I feel after these mods you just get into some minor things but I feel like seats could've definitely been an episode. Maybe if they do a season 2.5 (a year later review type of thing).

But I agree with most, about a medium truck take some good stuff from both. Not again surprised they both picked low truck especially how it conquered the Wall under its own power, but the winch incident is 100% driver error. You can clearly hear the spotter (Zach) going stop, stop,stop.

All in all I enjoyed it being a first gen owner, I feel like a lot of the stuff they were talking about was kinda dumb and not really necessary and was just part of the whole "overlanding" type of era we are in now. But still glad to see the old Taco getting some recognition over some other truck/SUV.

 

Could have got real drunk taking shots every time I heard them say "Overlanding".

 

They definitely should have thought about regearing and upgrading the brakes. The tundra brake mod is a no brainer. They even mentioned having trouble getting the truck to stop at a red light. Straight up dangerous and they should've added brakes to the list.

Lack of regearing reared its head when the hi-truck couldn't even go up the hill. Maybe they'll continue tinkering and add these things later, but at a minimum they really need to upgrade the brakes to the tundra ones.

As for the bumper coming off, yeah, I don't think you're supposed to drive OVER your winch cable.. idk what they were thinking. But as far as I can tell, it looks salvageable by just welding a new piece of plate to the frame horns and bolting the bumper back up. Not a huge deal.

The dudes on "4wd 24/7" say that all the time. If you haven't heard of them, they're the best offroading channel on YouTube. They're based in Australia.

 

It was a very fun series. I really enjoyed watching the guys work together on this project. I know this has been said before, but this series gave me some early-top gear feelings.

 

Finished all episodes. What a great series.
