So I'm going to lose the Wrangler Kevlar OEM hoops and probably go to the Yokohama A-TX.

Size will go from 265/70/16 to 265/75/16.

Do I want to replace the spare too if the size change would make things a bit weird if I have to use the spare or can I get off cheap and keep the smaller OEM tire as the spare only?

I can't really rotate the spare since it's on the black steel wheel and would look like dog product. If I don't have to buy a 5th tire that won't see regular use that would be nice and save some bucks. If it's going to cause problems if I have to use the spare then that's a worse outcome and would likely justify the extra $$ spent. I'm undecided on this.

    Thoughts?

Fuggit, I'm just gonna get a Trailfinder AT in 265/75/16 SL as the spare for half the money of the Yokos and have the Yokos in E doing the real work.

Buy the fifth wheel and do a 5 tire rotation. I do. At a minimum you want to try to match the outer diameter of your spare with your normal tires.

This is the perfect solution for you. Or you could look at any other affordable tire in the same size - assuming you do plan to only use it for emergencies.

My truck is mostly for off road, camping...etc type uses so I like to have a matching spare that is just as capable as the regular tires. But, if you're gonna spend most of your time on pavement then you really just need something decent in the correct diameter to get you by for a few hours or days while you get your tire fixed or replaced.

If you only intend it as a true spare, you don't need to change anything.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
It all comes down to how you use your Truck Hundreds of miles from home or only a few.

To me a spare is only good to get me to a place to repair a flat or buy two new tires these days at the most 30 miles.

Think of all those cars out there with baby sized temporary spares. Save you money and use your old tire & wheel as a temporary spare. I do.

5 tire rotation is the way to go with a matching 5th wheel, when I went to 285's my spare wouldn't fit underneath so I just had it strapped down in the bed until I got a swingout with mount.

I think a new Trailfinder as a spare is capable of getting me out of situations I hope not to be in. I've had the OEM Kevlar offroad on some decent trails in W. TX and will be doing so again in the not too distant future. They were ok but I'd rather bump up sidewall strength and get a better gripping tread pattern than the OEM. Read and watched too many reports of the GY failing when you need them the most.

Can't justify buying another stock TRD OR wheel + Yoko X-AT just for the spare to do rotations, that's a waste of money afaic. A whole new set of wheels (i.e. TRD) doesn't make much sense either if they're going to get scraped up on Black Gap or Old Ore Road etc. I will be hundreds of miles from home and hours from civilization.

Choosing new tires is a bitch, I will say that !

In a mismatched size spare situation stay out of 4WD when you have the spare mounted on the truck.

I went to 265/75/r16 ko2s from stock off roads. I went with a 5th because of size difference. mine isn't rotated because its on the spare rim. Gave my spare to a nice member on here, brand new

They're all going to be 265/75/16 so they are matched in size. That's my main concern.
The Trailfinder as a spare is also an AT SL for $96 vs the Yoko AT E at $226.
Another Yoko plus an OEM OR wheel would be an additional $300 minimum.

Punch holes in my logic, it helps and I won't bitch.

matched in size is most important. If you aren't going to be abusing the tires, then a cheaper, less capable spare is just fine to get you home/to the tire shop.

If the tires are going to see some abuse, then I would at least get one similarly rated as well as same size. matching wheel is purely an aesthetic choice.

so for the $140 difference, it's gonna be Yokohama 265/75/16 on all five rims.
This is gonna be a major upgrade from the GY Kevlars.
    get'em tomorrow.
