From your pictures, that cupola was never functional. If you intend for the ridge vent to be functional, you'll need to open the ridge for it. Also, for your nailing of the new shingles, go old school with roofing nails so you'll have a good feel for cracks in the dry old sheathing. Roll roofing for the starter to protect from snow melt backup, and a 1" overhang at the edges. Roofing was not my profession, but I've done a few.

I agree with Tom and Alan. It appears that cupola was just decoration. The one picture with "the boss" picking up the old shingles showed a soffit with no vents. Could always do what I did when I built my current home in late 2009 .... went with an unvented attic. No soffit vents and no blown-in insulation over the ceiling. An 8-inch layer of "open-cell" foam on the underside of the roof sheathing. When it's 100+ outside, it's never been warmer than 89 degrees in my attic. Costs a bit initially, but watching the electrical bills, it paid for itself in less than a year.

I purposely built the garage so I wouldn’t be able to put a lift in.
Ceiling to low and concrete psi low also..

it will force me to move around like Kurt.. lol

Guys a ridge vent will be going in and the ridge will be opened up. I'll also be installing 4" round soffit vents, 8 per side. I'll also cover the vents in the wall. I have a roofer that is going to put the roof back on. Ice and water shield, drip edge all the way around, synthetic tar paper which is way better than felt.
Side 2 is done, took a little longer today as I'm sore as can be, 2 days of a full body workout, lol. Hands, back, and legs are just muscle fatigued.
Just as much wood rot on this side, maybe even more. An old basket ball mount let a lot of water in.
    20210927_193643.jpg
Next I need to work on the front trim a little, replace the front soffit too. I worked right up until dark again but I got it closed back in so I'm happy.

10' boards in a truck with a 5' bed, lol. I normally would have used my trailer but it's full of the tearoff debris.
    20210927_180450.jpg
Still got a little room. I'll toss the cupola in it.

I've used the rear glass slider to carry 12' boards many times.. even helps support a thin board, like a 1X4" or something, and even though it still sticks out a couple feet, I don't feel it needs a flag. No worse than an open tailgate. A neighbor was complaining one day, so I told him what to do, and to think out of the box a little. Us old guys know a few things.

    Morning all:
I made a raised T that fits in the hitch to haul longer boards in the truck bed when I built the garage, it worked for what I needed it for.

MAy I borrow your cat for a few weeks? LOL

When we had the new roof installed a few years back I decided to go with an Owings Corning solution. One of the reasons why we chose Owings Corning was the Vent Sure fresh air intake vent. The house had soffit vents but the insulation had slid down and covered up the soffit vents. When the contractor installed the new roof he installed baffles to keep the insulation from covering up the soffit vents. Since installing the new roof our bedroom is cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

I am off to Lowes and to BJ's club this morning. Have a great day everyone.

:pumpkin: Good Morning Porchies! Well, today will be better, right?

Just need to prop it up a little. Damn.

    20210927_124001.jpg

Alright, build one side frame, and prop it over that. I got it.

    20210927_134332.jpg

    No, I don't. Damn.

    20210927_141534 1.jpg

Sumbitch has even less rigidity than I figured. Build up the second side, and force it over each one at a time.....

    20210927_153604 1.jpg

    And SPLOOT!

    20210927_163631.jpg

Enough bolts, and a vice-grip, and that will hold until today.

Wherever I've lived previously - vents around the sofits / eves were in place and an upper vent was provided to create the necessary attic draft. Standard building practice to avoid mold in wet areas. Then.... in recent times I've seen a problem that has occurred in California and here in Arizona due to wild fires. One evening a local TV outfit showed the result of a fast moving ground fire that had "attacked" a neighborhood near San Diego. The fire burned every home in the development - except one - that had no eve vents. It had been built after the initiation of a new construction code requirement banning their use - due to their propensity to suck burning embers into the attic. There was even ugly, time lapse photography showing the effect - and how the fire passed over the newer home and right up into the next one.

I know what the solution is - but my entire neighborhood would be subject to this problem. They were virtually all built to previous building practice. I have a tiled roof - that should be able to deal with some blowing embers (living next to a desert wash) - but it has edge venting around the whole exterior.

Was hoping for more clouds.....got to 98* and humid AF!

Second side of the top got trimmed and bolted

    Back wall back together

And finally, the front. Look! Door closes!

I'll cut a piece of a spare window for that square over the door for now. Not big enough for a vent kit. New light clips on the way. Finishing out the other exterior details can wait until then. Except for the tie down strap.

Some impressive home projects going on in our group.

Today is another music lesson and working on a spreadsheet for major and minor 7th chords. I am finding that I like reading and understanding music and how sounds go together in the different keys.

    Morning all:
Tom, now you need to find some other local musicians and get together for jam sessions!
If I remember right, about 65 yrs ago a neighbor played a banjo and a harmonica simultaneously, and later on another friends dad got together with buddies for jam sessions. If I also remember correctly, neither of those music encounters sounded too great, they sure didn't make it to the big time!
