If anyone wants some good information.... You should read a book called
"In The Gravest Extreme: The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection" by Massad F. Ayoob.

I'm my 5th chapter and it's very interesting and I recommend it (and other self defense books) to anyone..... especially if you have questions about 'what to do' in certain situations.

The second chapter is a brainphuck. About the legalities involved if/when you use a weapon to injure or kill and how it'll affect you in the courtroom. All I can say is...Holy shit!! It's a wake up call for the 'responsibility' of carrying.

    Carry on..... :D

I've always been taught that firing your weapon, even in a righteous shoot situation (no charges filed, etc.) is going to cost you at least $10,000 in legal fees, win or lose. Kinda tempers the Rambo attitude.

I challenge anybody with any type of gun whether chambered on not to get a shot off before your brains are splattered on the wall in this situation.

The "Show" your gun debate is an interesting one. Here in Arizona there are different laws pertaining to the Use of Deadly Force compared to the Threat of Deadly Force. So the "I have a Gun" becomes a criminal offense if used incorrectly, without ever brandishing your weapon.

My two cents, I hope to never have the need to use my CC weapon. If I do, there will be no statement saying, "I have a gun" or pulling up my shirt saying, "you want a piece of this?" They will be looking down the barrel of a gun.

    I hope it never happens.

Conversation has kind of quieted down, but I wanted to ask...

How many of you guys have wives, girlfriends, sisters, mothers etc. that carry a concealed weapon??

    edit: What are they carrying?

Here's one, do you all practice specific skill sets when at the range? I went through a few shooting courses while in the Navy, Mid-South, SSEW, some private shooting instructors and a lot of experienced people taught me a ton of information about shooting and mechanics of dynamic and reactive shooting. Its one thing to make holes in a static target with a static stance, its a whole new animal when its real. Here is my list of stuff I try to always work on

2 magazines of draw, fire, reasess, holster (double action)
2 magazines of draw, fire, reaquire, fire, reasess, holster (Start slowly and work up to controlled pairs)
2 magazines of controlled pairs with reload.
3 magazines of reload drill- start with a single round in the chamber, and an empty magazine in the weapon. Draw and fire and conduct a reload with afull magazine, fire a controlled pair. reasess and holster. Replace empty magazine in weapon and used magazine in holster, pouch, pocket etc. Repeat.
    2 magazines of off hand

If your shooting facility will allow it, shoot and move, forward, laterally, backwards, from cover, both right and left, from laying on your back, your side, your belly.
CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY practice drawing and shooting point blank at a target that is infront of you.

work with different clothing types (jackets, sweaters, business casual, for the ladies, skirts and womens shoes, you would be amazed at how it will change the way you stand.) reevaluate they way you carry and the gear you use.

Note: This is my .02 and in no way do I claim to be an expert on this. But I am all about sharing my experience and knowledge to help others.

My girlfriend carries an XD compact 9 in her purse or car, doesnt have the CHL just yet.

I normally carry a Ruger SP-101 IWB 1 o'clock because it is easy to conceal in TX heat with shorts and a t-shirt. On occasion I will carry my SA1911A1 Mil-spec OWB 3-4 o'clock underneath a button up shirt, or my Baby Eagle .40 in a shoulder rig underneath my jacket.

Just got a console safe for the taco for x-mas, one of these days I will reinstall it with pics so I can post a good walkthrough on here for those who may also be interested in it.

    Thanks for the tips!!
We just joined a new range this past summer that has pistol pits that allows you to do just about anything within the pit (obviously, keeping the fire in the direction of the mounds/backstops). We'll be doing more CC type drill when the weather gets warmer. For now, I'll probably do some at home with snap caps.

Question for you.... I'm left eye dominant and shoot pistoal right handed and I often shoot with my right eye closed. I've been trying to shoot with both eyes open. When both eyes are open, the 'dominance' (hard to explain) often shifts.
If I close my right eye and get lined up and then open the right eye....the dominance will stay in the left.

Are there any drills that'll force my left eye to be 'superior' in dominance? It'd be nice to just draw & be lined up immediately with both eyes open? Or is that just something I'll have to do over and over again....drawing with both eyes open until my left 'learns' ?

I am the same way, I always cant my weapon to the left (about 10-11 oclock position), for both eyes open shooting, track the front sight and you should automaticaly track on your dominant (I remeber is somethig how our brain interprets the image) eye. Practice drawing and aiming for a doorknob or something similar in size from 10-15 feet away and track your front sight as soon as you bring it into your field of view. as always, practice is everything.

I took my best friends little sister last weekend, she jumped about four feet in the air when someone in another lane fired a round. We were shooting .22, and once she got used to it, she had a blast. afterward we talked about the dangers of shooting, and the benefits of what it brings to the table. She at least had an open mind about it and was willing to try. I love showing my hobbies to people who've never experienced them, its not for everyone, but for those who it is, its awesome.

Put a patch on the eye that is currently dominant. Your mind can learn how to change which eye is the dominant eye this way.

Not sure if this would help but try using a dslr camera and taking pictures with both eyes open. I do this so I can switch dominant eyes to see what is going on outside of the view of the camera if I need to move quickly.

I will certainly do that this month while I'm on a different shift (I can practive in privacy - so to speak). With an unloaded weapon &/or snap caps (had to say it....):D

Funny you should say that... I actually have an occluder. I used it a few times many years ago when we got our first gun. I never was 'disciplined' in using it. We were shooting trap pretty regularly and I was getting half-way good at shooting with both eyes. But then again....the target was 25-50 yards away (so to speak).

I don't want to change my eye dominance. I just want to strengthen dominance I have (in my left eye).

    Neat idea...but a bit too expensive. ;)
