At worst I overpaid for a package I requested, it's not a dealer mark up. You don't have to like the packages they offer. I'm happy with what I got for what I paid.

I put down a deposit on my '22 TRD OR last week, which should arrive in late October. I'm paying MSRP for the truck and accessories, plus $200 doc fee and $850 for a "ValPro 360" care package that was "non-negotiable" at $2400 until I politely said I'd have to go look elsewhere if that was the case. They gave me $1000 more than I was ready to accept for my trade-in based on KBB and NADA, so that balanced the markup.

Overall it feels like I did fine. Two years ago I would have called myself a fool for paying MSRP (or more) for any new vehicle, but I also would have gotten 50% less for my trade-in back then. Since there were no new trucks available to test drive, I test drove a 2018 TRD OR with over 30,000 miles - the price in the window was $600 less than my new truck.

Can anyone show me any paperwork that you receive with your temporary vin ? Is it on a build sheet ? I don't have anything except the sheet used showing what I will end up paying and deposit down. It's basically a generic sheet with no temp vin etc.

Just got a 2021 Limited 4x4 in Army Green. Original MSRP was listed at 44,710 (increased price from base MSRP included wheel locks and hard tonneau cover), got them to knock off 500 and throw in all weather floor mats (they weren't included from factory.) This dealer installs the brake plus feature on all new vehicles which adds 399 and I couldn't talk them out of lowering the price any further. No additional dealer markups and didn't get upsold on anything else. My final sale price came out to 44,610 before fees and everything. All in all given the market I'd say that I got a pretty good deal.

Same deal here minus the breaks on a OR DCSB. Just happened to see the mats laying around and asked my guy if he could throw em in. Sad times but its cheaper than a used one

It’s not really paperwork (if they have an allocation accepted and being built, then they know the vin and can put it on paper). When your dealers allocation is approved they will assign it a temp vin while going through the process of being built, the last six will be 2 numbers which is usually the build week for the year, a letter, and then three more numbers. They will be able to track that by dealer daily, once it’s built it will have a permanent vin and then you can use that to look up through Toyota’s VIN lookup site.

This goes back to all the folks who say they “order” a truck through the dealer and all that other stuff which is just wrong. If that was the case you would get a temp VIN, permanent VIN from a dealer with no problem. It’s definitely not like that at all, most of these folks are putting their deposits down not knowing what and how the process works which has been explained over and over and over again which confuses members to think they can just waltz right in and order what they want.

If your dealer has already received the allocation then they will have all that info. If they don’t have it, there is a good chance they haven’t gotten the allocation approved and still waiting. They only have allocation listings twice a month to try and get one, keep in mind the hundreds of other dealers trying to get either that exact configuration or just anything in general for inventory on the lot.

Use different language when talking to your dealer, ask them if the allocation has been approved yet? When you show that you know how the process works then it helps a little more. I would ask your salesman but chances are he doesn’t really know so go to the inventory manager/ director because they deal with all allocations and incoming vehicle’s.

I was looking for a Tacoma so I texted my salesman. I purchased a new 2018 Tundra and a new 2020 Supra from him and he's always been pretty straight with me as far as I know. When I asked about a Tacoma he said they had a Barcelona sport allocated to them and due to be in first week of Oct. After agreeing on a price he told me the due date changed to the middle of Oct. I didn't text him again until last week when I asked if there was any news. He told me the due date moved to the end of Oct. I asked about a temporary vin and he said they don't have a vin yet. I mentioned that I've read about temp vins on here but he didn't say anything other than he would keep checking for me. Now I'm in Canada so I don't know if things are different here. I was hoping to get more concrete evidence about temp vins to go back to him with because I don't know if I'm being bs'd at all ?

See the quoted image from BuffaloTaco90 above? I have a printout just like that for my '22 TRD OR that's supposed to be built October 4th. The only difference is, the "Vehicle Base Model" and "Total MSRP" lines have N/A instead of numbers since 2022 pricing wasn't available yet, and the fourth-to-last digit of the VIN listed on mine is a letter instead of a number. As I understand it, that letter indicates that it's a "temporary VIN" that won't match the actual VIN when my truck arrives.

I'm not usually one to say "assume good intent" about car salesmen, but if this guy's been honest with you before, he's probably just trying not to open that can of worms since it doesn't lead anywhere useful. Knowing the temporary VIN won't make your truck arrive any sooner. You could ask him if they have a build sheet (again, like BuffaloTaco90's picture above) that he could share a copy of. At least that way you'd have a clear picture of what options and accessories your truck will be configured with.

I "Ordered" my Tacoma on 5-22-2021. I put down $500 and received a purchase order with the assigned Temporary VIN and the OTD Price. I took delivery of my Tacoma on 7-9-2021. It came in about a week early. Approximately 2 weeks before delivery the Dealer gave me the Permanent VIN. Only the first 8 numbers were the same between the Temporary Vin Versus the Permanent Vin

The Dealers around me basically had no allocations for Tacomas'. I found a High Volume Dealer about 50 miles from my home. They were able to "Order" for me exactly what I wanted by giving me their allocated Tacoma with a $500 deposit to purchase. We had all the elements of a legal contract. They gave me both VIN Numbers and a Purchase Order. I call that an "Order"

You might be doing prospective new buyers a disservice buy telling them they can't do what I did. You are making very Generalized Statements about the buying process.

I got my 2020 TRD Offroad at Toyota of Portland on Broadway on the last day of March 2020. Right at the beginning of the pandemic. They had 75 Tacoma's on their lot. Mine was the same configuration, except it's a manual and Cement instead of Army Green. They took 4k off MSRP. I was out the door for 37k. No market adjustment. They took off the perma plate charge when I demanded they do so, and generally were very motivated to make a sale. They actually just called over the weekend trying to buy back the my Taco. Amazing the difference 18 months makes.

I literally posted the process which comes straight from Toyota. Not a personal opinion like yours.

I’m glad you were able to get your unicorn TRD Pro with its rare build “ordered”. Definitely a first.

Please inform all the other members on here going into a dealerships and finding out that they can’t order one how easy your process was and what they are doing wrong. I’d love to hear this one.

You requested a truck that was already allocated to that dealer, you didn’t order the truck, that dealer already had it allocated to them way before you even went in to inquire about it. They don’t just get a temp vin and say we ordered this for you. Toyota has these trucks slated to be built way in advance. For them to even get a temp vin that truck has already been through it’s allocation process and on to your regional Toyota reps. They determine which dealers get what allocations in that area.

But since you feel so special and was able to custom order a Tacoma through your dealers magical ordering department it would be nice to know the name of the dealer so members in your area can contact them to custom order their Tacomas and not deal with other dealers that aren’t allowing them to do so.

I placed my deposit for a 21 Lunar Rock Pro in April. They didn’t get it allocated until end of June and it arrived late August. I knew the process of getting it allocated was a pain from the previous 15 dealers I worked with. Finally I was able to talk to a family members neighbor who works for corporate who explained the process. Laughing when saying that people say they can order the trucks, it’s a dealers way of getting a deposit and potential buyer. Having that deposit doesn’t mean a single thing until that dealer can get the allocation approved. But if your dealer made you feel special by saying your ordered your truck then feel all the joy in the world but don’t spread false narratives to other members.

New member here, not new to buying cars. My son wants to buy a Tacoma SR Access cab with jump seats 4WD and I am doing the searching and dealing (I like a challenge). MSRP for this trim package is in the 29K to 32K region. Almost all of the Tacomas in the state of NY and some surrounding Eastern and Southern states on websites are already signed for and are not available (especially 4WD). The 2 that were available (in NYC) that I got to negotiating with a manager on the phone they wanted 5K over MSRP.

Keep in mind I have never paid MSRP for a vehicle.

I don't do the go to the dealership song and dance thing. I usually do it by email, "here is the Truecar price (or whatever) will you match it?". This is especially true as I am searching dealer inventory up to 6-7 hours from my house.

I really am striking out. At this point I am ready to pay 2K over MSRP if I need to. But I can't stomach 5K over yet and I don't see people paying that reading back several pages (but I haven't seen people from NY posting, I'm in Northern NY). I don't have the option of putting down $500 with a dealer and waiting months to get an allocation as my son needs the vehicle.

I could probably forestall a bunch of aggravation by starting the call with "How much over MSRP am I going to pay?"

Nice!. I wish I bought a tacoma way earlier but I wouldnt got that much for a trade back in 2020. Just sold an 2017 subaru forester xt turbo to carmax! For $22k I paid $23k back In 2018 for it. Lol. As for now they got the pricing for the 2022 on toyota.com and I got the build sheet or spec. So in my calculations MSRP is $40k before fees and licensing

I would suggest you find the Dealers with the highest Tacoma Sales in the regional district. They will have the best selection and the best Prices.
