i always thought about trying to organize something up here. There’s a great ice cream place and a huge parking lot near, which includes playground/soccer fields for those who have kids and want to bring them as well. But I haven’t pitched that idea yet.

Question for the group: if you were towing a single axle trailer(6.5 x 12, roughly 1800 lbs) 3-4 times a week for 8 months out of the year, would you keep your Tacoma or step up in size from one of the big 3? I also tow a 5x10 tandem 7k dump trailer occasionally but not often. Looking for opinions.

How far are you going ?? Just what kind of traffic and terrain ??

I have 800 pounds in the bed plus drag another 2000 a few times a week

Any real Love for the Toyota or is it just a work Truck.

I have a Ford F250 7.3 if i need to get serious about towing

I had some issues on my ‘19(rear diff replaced, the largest repair, among a couple other things). Swore off Toyota until I picked up a ‘21 and it was absolutely nothing like the ‘19 and am beyond happy. Both were SR’s but have all the features I need and want.

It’s probably 25 miles a week with trailer, nothing big, traffic isn’t too bad, I do have some larger hills, which I don’t really have an issue getting the taco up the hill. It has a tow rating of 6,500 so I’m sure it would be fine. Im always safe, give myself extra space.

I just always see everyone with 2500/250’s towing trailers like mine and I’m like hmmm… am I doing something wrong here? I don’t plow snow, don’t find the need for more power. It might just be SDS, wanting a larger truck. Lol

youll destroy that Tacoma in no time with that kind of use. If you are set on a Toyota, go with a larger rear axle and maybe a supercharger. That’ll be cheaper than getting a 3/4 or wonton truck.

Dunno, if he has to upgrade the axle in the Tacoma and a power adder might as well go for a Tundra at that point. Maybe @MoneyMan55 can shed some light on that subject, he went from a Tacoma to a Tundra.

i wonder what the MSRP on a new tundra will be. I think no matter what the case, buying a new or “new to you” car in this time period you’re going to get raked over the coals.

True. I bought my 2021 Offroad the week before Christmas 2020 and thought I overpayed a little. Looking at the same equipped truck now $5,000 higher I can feel slightly better, except when I give the check to the local credit union every month

Yep glad I made the move. Tundra has tons of room, tranny is smooth as butter compared to my old Tacoma. Has as much power as your right foot desires. Get comments all the time what a nice truck she is. Actually had a student @ the university approach me as I was leaving after my shift. Commented on my truck, said his Dad owned one. I said your Dad has good taste in vehicles! Seriously, for a student to look up from their phone and notice any vehicle is impressive these day! LOL I wanted one of the last V-8s, plan on keeping JD for a long long time. Each to their own.

I'll probably eventually venture into a Tunda, even with the new twin turbo V6, but I'll let Toyota work the bugs out first (like I did with the 3rd gen Tacoma). After my last couple VW's I don't mind turbochargers at all. Far as power in my current Tacoma it's sufficient. Been driving the Camry the past couple days and while the 2.5L 4 banger is decent, it doesn't have that oomph that the Tacoma has, especially when passing. Now, I gotta step into the Tacoma a bit more to get there, but it's got more ass then the 2AR-FE in the Camry.

Yeah Tacoma is like the old YZ or RM dirtbikes, gotta get them up on the powerband. Probably before your time but yeah.

Hah, even though I'm a late '89 baby, I somewhat remember those. Grew up around all kinds of "old school" (as my peers put it) stuff growing up and enjoy older stuff. Yanno, I never had a dirtbike or 4 wheeler in my life. Hmm, might have to change that. Crap, there goes my savings

not with an 86, they were built like tanks for their size. The problem is Toyota continues to increase the size and towing capacity of these trucks but leaves the axles and drivetrain less than desirable to accomplish said task. For just driving around a newer one you’ll be fine. My 2010 is rated for 6500 lbs towing, I doubt it can tow that across a single state line without taking a few years off its life.

They are all equally ugly but if you want a vehicle for towing I’d stick with Ford or Dodge since Chevy puts an IFS on a full size truck and calls that satisfactory. If dodge interiors have gotten any better over the years I’d go with them over the new ford based on looks and drivetrain. You used to get about 5 years out of a dashboard and steering wheel because of the junk interiors of dodges though.

Before Covid hit, I test drove them all. Ford had the most comfortable ride, almost like my WRX(pretty good for a truck), where as Ram felt like a true truck. Chevy was a cloud, but I wasn’t very interested with them or GMC. They all carry a premium in price, especially now. Trying to plan for the future, essentially for my next vehicle be the “long hauler”. Leased the last 2 tacos and hoping to buy the next if I find the one.
