I remembered you talking about them a while back.

That was the first car that I drove with a "freewheeling" transmission. I think freewheeling was used to keep someone from engine breaking the 2-cycle engine on a downhill run that would have starved the engine of fuel and lubricant. Later when SAAB started using the German Ford Taunus V4 (halved 289) in the 96, 97, and 98, they kept the freewheeling as a lever and claimed economy for downhill runs. It was kind of a mild version of hypermiling on a downhill. They continued with the option with the first generation of the model 99 that initially used a Triumph engine. I don't recall a fuel-injected SAAB 99 with the freewheeling option. Most became automatics by the time SAAB started building their own engines.

The Sonett with the Ford V4 was actually fun to drive and ahead of its time as an FWD sports car in 1967.

We called this model the duckbilled platypus. The body was fiberglass.

The V4 was an impressive-looking little box and was well received in the US by buyers that were more comfortable looking at a V engine than a straight 4.

It was torquey and had a growl that sounded like a baby V8.

The SAAB 98 was a two-door wagon. I only saw one 98 that came in for service.

Wtf...yeah that story has way too many holes in it.

But still, the piece of shit needs to get locked away. These fires that start from anything but natural causes is getting out of hand.

Probably not, but I like the idea. I think they have plans for extra and double cab though.

Yeah I prefer the presentation more, looks more rugged and usable. The current scope of EVs seems to only go as far as loosely looking like a truck, or ridgeline as it were since using it as a truck would likely lead to damage.

I think the problem with these startups is the tech is growing faster than they can keep up with.

They're all trying super hard to be something new, most of them feel pretty similar in design and functionality cues, I think a few of them need to merge together to gain some power in the segment. Otherwise it'll be business as usual when a real car brand buys them out. But together they might be able to innovate and avoid that.
