I wonder how long it will last if folks are not happy with it.

 

only thing i can think of is maybe they were outsourcing glasswork and started buying sheets and cutting windows in-house? would make production easier i guess… idk.

 

Oh wow, yours is much closer to the bed rail.
As you can see, mine is more than an inch away. I wonder how close to the cab window your X1 is.
I got 1 strip and as you can see its a double bulb seal and the two bulbs are off the rail.

The 6 gauge die looked tiny and I went with 4 gauge on my 6.

Don’t have a pic of the raw crimp but got one of my fancy labeling. Looks real slick.

 

I took my SP out for its maiden voyage: a 3 day (2 night) swing through central Oregon.
Got pretty cold at night (mid 30's F).

My observations so far:

• I love the side access doors. They're very solid and the large openings make getting stuff out of the back a breeze. Particularly beneficial since I had my bike rack in the receiver hitch which makes tailgate access not as convenient.
• The Exped mat was great once I figured out that it needs to be pumped up a fair bit. First night I didn't have enough air in it. Second night I pumped it (using the included fabric style pump) a bunch more and it was great. I can see why it's so popular. I will be getting the little electric pump to make it even easier.
• I've got to learn how to deal with the condensation. The venting system is still new for me so I need to figure it out. Soon. Also I'm investigating insulation. What are other folks doing?
• Taking down the tent in bad weather is my biggest concern. I plan on using the SP for camping in the winter in the mountains. Rolling up all the tent flaps prior to closing the lid will be a HUGE pain if it's raining or snowing. I did some experiments today with closing the tent with the flaps zipped closed. Realistically, the only way to do that is with the tent floor retracted. But then the tent hangs down and blocks the rear view. What are other folks doing to keep the inside dry when closing the tent in inclement weather?

 

Weird I’ve always had my flaps zipped closed with the removable floors in place while closing it. I’ve never had any struggles closing it at all. I even keep two sleeping bags in there along with the mattress.



On a side note when I picked up my camper (#22) all the flaps were zipped closed and I was taught how to open and close it that way. When I see people picking up their campers now I notice that the flaps are all rolled up. Not sure why that is lol!

 

Same with me. If the exped is not fully deflated it can be tricky but I usually have it all closed as well and now have a couple bags and blanket in there.

 

I've yet to use the SP in the rain.

Are there any issues or ways to prevent water from getting in when you close the tent?
I'm concerned that closing it in the rain will somehow trap water inside and get it wet as you're driving to a new camp site.

That's really an issue with everything though.. maybe some of you SP owners haven't done the RTT thing prior.. but it's common to close up wet and open back up at home afterwards, or just making due while out camping. I've had to let our RTT sit out and defrost before I could even attempt to fold it up.. then had to open it up again later to air out.

I’m more interested in how much water gets in when you close it on multiple day trips with rain.
I do multiple day trips in winter when it rains.
I had an RTT but it was low quality so would sleep in my shell during rainy or snowy days.

 

I have closed the tent in pretty heavy rain and I simply keep the windows zipped. In fact I’ve tried unzipping a quarter of the sides for better air exhaust when closing and 1) the side window flaps always pop out and I have to go over and stuff them in on the sides (which often causes the tent to pop back up or come down too soon), and 2) it doesn’t make it that much easier. I now keep the windows zipped and the ExPed FULLY deflated and just have to pull down slowly and let the air escape slowly. Also, when opening I simply pull the rear flap open a bit in the middle, without unzipping, which lets enough air in.

 

How was your experience in the rain?

 

I used it for 3 days in the rain. Water will get in when you close it but it's not that bad. Just make sure to air it out whenever you are able to

It was ok. I had a little leakage on the rear corners

Cab is about 1 1/4" from shell at the bed rail level, a little less than 1" halfway up due to the curve of the window. Also, just noticed I have about 3/8" of the rail in front of the shell, so it's only sitting on a little more than half the rail. Hmmm...

 

I sent a video to Peter showing water intrusion. It won't let me upload it here, mp4 not allowed. I'll try a PM. Essentially this was on my maiden voyage back in April on the Oregon coast, so it was cold and the windows and vents were all closed. There was some condensation, but not enough to account for the amount of water I think. It was mostly pooling on the aluminum that supports the bed platform. A few drips below in the truck bed, but not much. My opinion is that there was some intrusion at the rear corners where the keder rail turns and the stitching is stretched. I can see some light through the stitches and I think there's space under the keder rail. Just my opinion.

 

RV gate is finished.. ready for the Taco + Super Pacific. Just need to do some Sun Sails over the area. Also got the cut-back Prinsu rack back on. Plan to start sealing up everything this weekend.. then start wiring up the truck once all my Dual Battery stuff and other goodies start showing up.
