I miss being able to buy something online (LIKE A SOFTOPPER HINT HINT) and not have to go thru 900 different customer service reps to see if they even have a potential ship date for it, and then to find out its a up to 6 month wait to even have it ship, and then another 2 month wait for shipping.

Question for those who have messed with the steering.

At random times I get what feels like binding or a complete lack of power steering. It is random.

I have replaced the rack (which I initially thought was causing this problem) and also the intermediate shaft which is also a culprit of tough or janky steering. The rack was bled by turning the wheels left to right multiple times and keeping an eye on the fluid. I did run the truck and also turn left to right too.

yesterday I got the same lock up with everything new on. Was sitting to make a left. Started to turn (was moving) and couldn’t complete the turn since the steering locked up (had to really muscle it to complete the turn).

My next thought is going to the power steering pump. I am guessing that a check valve is sticking open allowing for no pressure when needed

any input would be appreciated. Hate throwing parts at stuff and I’m not sure if it’s the culprit.

I did find a pump for cheap which does come with a filter (thanks @zuknewbie for sending me the Facebook add). Will install the pump first and later on install the filter and possibly a cooler.

I'm getting a weird sound with my Taco.
When I am driving, it makes a shhh shhh shhh shhh sound. It's tempo increases with speed.
Trying to figure it out right now but wondering if anyone here has any guesses? It seems to be coming from the left side. Maybe front left.

I had this exact noise when I had something stuck in my rim.

Sounds like a rotational noise? Does it almost sound like a growl or whirring noise? If you’re driving straight down a road start swerving side to side and see if it gets louder when turning left or right.

I'm curious to see what you find. Mine doesn't lock but does get hard when moving from stop and steering close to lock.

    Rotational noise.
I raised the front left of the truck and spun the wheel and the noise appeared again.
It sounds like a whirring noise.
I took the wheel off and spun the rotor and the noise appeared again.
I'll try the swerving when I put the wheel back on.
My guess right now is that something is touching my front left rotor??

Edit: checked the area and it's coming from the rotor and not anywhere deeper.

Hmm, was there anything caught in the brake pads or in under the rotor? Maybe a leaf or something somewhere in there? If it gets louder on that side as you load it up when swerving side to side it might be a wheel bearing?

Check the dust shields as well, sometimes they do get bent by outer objects.

I know you have most likely tried all I'm about to say but I'll say it anyway...

    1. make sure your using power steering fluid not transmission fluid
    2. jack up the truck and support the front under the LCA's to simulate ride height
    3. steering unlocked turn the steering wheel from one side to the other and feel for any binding
    4. do the same thing this time at one of the tires cycle all the way feel carefully for any binding
    5. start the truck up and cycle the steering wheel and listen and feel for any abnormal noise or binding
    6. make sure all connections are tight and no air bubbles are in the resivour. with the truck running
    7.if all that is good
    a) remove return line start the truck up and let all the fluid come out, cycle the steering till empty
    b) remove the pump
c)remove the pully from the pump take notice how hard it is to come off, (too loose maybe the pully might be spinning on the shaft)
    d) take compressed air and with the lined disconnected from the rack blow trough them taking notice of how much air is going through the lines ( checking for restriction)
    e) put a new pump on reinstall every thing, fill fluiid and bleed system.

Thats what I would do anyway.. good luck with it, Personally I think its a debris in the system or mechanical binding somewhere..
