thinking of relocating to texas...

How does everyone like texas? I was originally thinking of CA, but lately have started thinking texas. Where, I have no idea. I've been to dallas and houston a couple times and like them. Hows the job market out there and any idea on how pay is compared to IL? I hate the winters here and they keep raising taxes all over the place. Figured I'd ask the locals the plus and minuses of the state.

 

Currently in North Carolina for work but wife and I were born and raised in the Houston area. Austin is one of my favorite cities in Texas, in the middle of hill country beautiful women and lakes.
Texas MUCH cheaper to live than California.

I've known a few people relocate from socal to texas because of a job offer. Where, I couldn't get you exact details, but they seem to like it so far. Socal is going through some rough times unless you concentrate in large cities like LA, SF. It depends on the job too.

 

I am not sure how the pay compares to IL. We have no state income tax and home prices are very affordable. A lot of very large companies have locations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Citi, bank of America, wells Fargo, lockead Martin, bell helicopter, TI, and many others.
Almost all cities will have areas of crime. If you decide to come down here check out crime reports for the area. Arlington has some neat search features on their website that allows to search by address, street, intersection and by apartment complex.
North Dallas has a lot of growth in the Plano, McKinney, Frisco area.
I don't really care for the Houston area. Very humid, a lot of traffic and crime seems to be everywhere. I have family there and hate going.

I like no state income tax and the low cost of living. As said before, beautiful women, great food, and nice weather. How can you go wrong?

Im south of Austin and the crime rate is almost non existent. There are bad areas everywhere but buying in a better neighborhood makes a huge difference. I wouldnt live south of San Antonio though. The S. Texas valley is great but there is a lot of crime down there.

 

youll like texas it def alot cheaper than cali all around good weather lot of places things to do nice place to live
i live in san antonio all my life only thing bad is gotta drive a good distance to hit up some trails depending where you live

 

Thanks forth replies guys. No income tax is awesome! They just raised ours from 3% to 5% :-/. I am currently an electrician. How construction in dfw area? Pretty dead here in IL. I know Texas is pretty weak for unions, but anyone know how construction unions are there? Thanks for the help guys.

 

Unions pretty much don't exist around here. Construction is pretty good around here. It's not what it ust to be 4-5 years ago. Property values have remained fairly stable.

 

If you are in construction your best bet would be to learn Spanish. You can be a supervisor and boss the illegals around. Texas is very anti union. Very pro greed and taking advantage of others misfortune. I've lived here fourty years.

 

Texas would be cool. But I say Arizona!!

 

you wouldnt regret a move to Texas. Austin has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the US, and has a many many IT jobs

ahh. well thats ok. plenty of other opportunities as well. if you were looking to move still I would definitely check out Austin and the cen-tex(central texas) hill country over Dallas and Houston. just alot nicer; less crime, less unemployment, less people period...

 

We have a ton of Cali transplants in Austin.

East Texas is good Texas. I'd suggest Tyler as a nice area if you'd like a mix of rural/city life. It's only 2 hours from Dallas if you ever want to head to the big city.

No public land in Texas, and new comers are treated like a crop to be harvested...it is also the consumer FRAUD capital of the US...Lived there three times, 86-87 in Texarkana, 90-93 in Amarillo, and 03-08 DFW.

Oh yea, and the politics REALLY suck.
