Hahaha. I knew someone would. I thought about it.. but we just manually sliced it real quick. I wanted max clearance as well and I think the sharp edge will match the SP decently.

 

I held my tongue on that radius... but if you want to do all the things… I would have done more of a 110 degree cut and not 90 as when the truck frame flexes, any camper with an overhang doesn't move in a vertical plane.

Guilty as charged. I definitely am a novice at this tent business.
It's why I have really appreciated reading about the experiences of the early SP adopters.

However, I am no novice when it comes to winter camping.

and have spent plenty of nights comfy in the back of my truck


I was one of the early depositors for the GFC (order #23 back in Feb 2018).
But I backed out and got a refund because I was concerned about use in the winter.

So when I saw SP claims about a four season tent, I took the bait.




Thankfully it appears that closing the tent with flaps closed can be done.

I have tried closing the tent with the sides zipped, full floor, and the exped removed. No dice.
Even letting the air out slowly I still get fabric hung up and can't get the latches closed.
When I picked my X1 up, they had all flaps rolled up and made a point of saying they should be rolled up prior to closing the tent.
I should have made my concerns known then.

My current theory is that the early tent material and/or the closing tensioners have changed somehow.
Or it could well be that I am completely retarded.

I did send an email to SP to ask about my issue. I'll update with anything I hear.

 

Hmm. Not sure why you are having issues. Both ways can and should be done for sure.

I roll the doors because it's easier. With the doors zipped I slowly lower the wedge until most the air is out. Then I check both sides for tuck issues and lift it a couple inches, then tuck in whatever is sticking out. Repeat the re- tucking process a couple more times if need.

Also make sure your vents are fully flat/closed if you haven't already instead of in the open position.

 

How "deflated" is your xped?
I have to fold mine in half and lay on it for a while for it to be deflated enough to get a clean close.
I might even start using my pump to deflate it even more, but has worked by folding in half and laying on it.

 

I really appreciate the feedback from you early adopters.
I know this will work for my needs. I will figure out a way.

So I went back to try it again a little while ago.

I thought maybe the screens should also be zipped closed as well as the storm flaps.
That didn't do it.
I tried using a ski pole (someone else had used a golf club) to push in the tent fabric as it was slowly coming down.
No luck.

I then propped the back open with a chunk of wood and used a step stool to go around and tuck in the fabric.

Still no luck; I was able to get one side latched, but not the other.
I still haven put the exped back in yet, so all these trials have been without a mattress in place.

It seemed that there might be an interference from the bracket that holds the top of the gas shock.
I took a closer look and found this (looking down at the bottom rail):

Saw it on both sides


It appears that the pivot pin (name?) is catching the side rails.
It's dug out a little gouge. And created the metal shavings.


So I went to my engineering flowchart and found my solution.


Cleaned the shavings, added some magic Boeshield to the bottom rail and sure enough, I can get it latched with all flaps closed and the floor in place.
I may cautiously etch out a bit more of the bottom rail to make it easier.

Still need to try it with the deflated exped.

 

I sure hope these builds aren't getting sloppier as time goes on... Quality should always be priority.

 

Good catch with the bracket/pin.
I was going to say, loosen it and try to move it inward, or grind pin down if possible but you're in Oregon.
Might be worth a trip for them to look at it to be honest...

So far I've been affected by two issues.

1. Sealing on my first gen bed
2. The tent strut bracket pinching my tent. (similar to yours I think)

 

I still can't believe how much movement this is.
I don't think I see any when applying the same motion and force as you. Thank gosh I reinforced it. Doesn't look like you're applying too much force.

 

I cut the rack with extra per @nudavinci64 and his setup.. and having to trim extra for the flex. I think it'll be good... And I didn't want Rads.

 

Everywhere you drive, you will be judged for that cut.

 

Here's another rack option. I bought a Sherpa Animas rack. I didn't feel like it was worth cutting my old Prinsu. I'm not super confident doing that sort of thing and I have less tools than the rest of you. Plus, things sell for so much on Craigslist at the moment. The old Prinsu sold for almost as much as the new rack.

Making progress on the X1 wiring project.
Got the shunt working but more interesting, got a read out of the X1 light draw.
Depending on the color, they draw more or less. Also depending on the brightness obviously.
Here I go with white at the highest level to the lowest level. Highest level around 2.2A.
