A 4x4 piece of 1/2" ply might be too heavy. 1/4" ply might be better with maybe some cleats attached to the back to prevent sagging. Worth trying it out first before diving in.

You also do false beams divided into squares and set loose panels in.

I have the dining room planned out to try it before going crazy on the rest of the house. Only problem with beams is I only have a little over an inch of room from the ductwork to maintain an eight foot ceiling since everything was crammed so tight. That was the reasoning behind using unistrut for a grid. Compact and strong. I’ve contemplated rewiring everything with a box and locating them in an accessible area, but that quickly became far too convoluted. Not to mention some of the wiring in the exterior walls appear to have been poured over in place.

i know you said no drop ceilings but, in case you aren’t aware, they make some fancier tiles now that IMO would look better than a plywood ceiling
    https://www.armstrongceilings.com/residential/en-us/suspended-ceiling-systems/drop-ceiling-tiles.html#bbbh={"browseCeilings":[{"dataKey":"browse-ceilings-results","page":2,"filters":[{"filterName":"installation","selectedValue":"Drop/Suspended (Accessibility)"}]}]}

Heres 124 different options but I’m sure there are more styles out there too

    edit:

nvm I just read where you didn’t want to spend that kind of money on ceiling tiles lol

Downstairs minus foyer, living and master probably 1500 sqft worth of ceiling. The real work will be the floors. They had carpet and linoleum over concrete on damn near all 4000 sqft. I’ve been grinding and polishing room by room as we remodel. Messy work, but the polished concrete will be a long lasting, good looking floor.

It may come down to that if I can’t come up with anything else. I’ve seen some plank ceilings that are made to snap onto the existing grid work. Seemed like a decent option, but it’s made from mdf and I don’t know that I’ll like fake looking wood all over my ceiling.

The paint that isn't flaking off looks new enough to have been within the last five years. The house was built in '90, so I'm guessing this isn't the original paint. Definitely not the original wood based on the other wear I'm seeing, the latticing and the steps are shot.
Tracking, thank you. Wood doesn't look to be holding moisture, but I plan on siliconing up the gaps. I'll look into that coating. I'll definitely check out Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore. Thanks for the heads-up on the coupon!
Oh definitely, I found a half can of Glidden in that porch color so that might explain it.
Lol yes, I already nicked it with the scraper and the pressure washer.

    Thanks everyone!!

I’m going to rent a floor grinder at HD this weekend. I really hope it’s easier than the 7” angle grinder I’ve been using :anonymous: luckily I haven’t done much that way. I was testing the waters. I’ve had to air chisel some of the linoleum backing that just wouldn’t grind up. Awful.

I used one on my shop floor (30x40) and it worked well. Messy as hell but the end results were great.

Nah luckily it was added after so the risk is low. Shag carpet originally haha Not a lot of the backing was grinded and was always wet to keep the dust down. Last house had a lot of asbestos plumbing insulation though. I researched getting rid of it, but the general consensus was it was only mildly dangerous and only if disturbed, so I didn’t bother with it. Even less dangerous with short term non dramatic (like 9/11) exposure.

asbestos in lino adhesive is usually only a Level 1 remediation because it is not friable as long as it does not become airborne , like if you grind it haha

I didn’t know that. I’m sure I’ve ground some of that shit up at our office though :anonymous: I quit smoking a couple years ago, so that kinda cancels out, right? Haha :bananadead:

I never got the stuff in the old house tested, but it fit the description/time period so I avoided it as best I could just in case. What do you mean by encapsulated? When disposed of or like behind a wall if kept?
