Honestly, I do not remember exactly what size I did those holes. I just measured the hose and selected a bit that was slightly larger. You can still work on making the moons fit in the hole and such. Just wait for your HRB to drill for the lines.

 

did you already buy the half moon plugs? I have a pair I didn’t use and a set of new flywheel bolts if you’re interested.

 

Thanks for the offer. I'm actually experimenting with some tapered silicon plugs used for lab test vials. Perfect dimensions, I'll just have to freeze them in order to make the holes or just punch a solder iron through them.

 

Cool idea. What about a hollow punch tool to make those holes? Harbor Freight has cheapies that should do the trick.

 

Not likely, seeing how thick these are. I will report my findings if they end up working out.

Tomorrow I'll email Kirk and source the bearing. Any perks of going with the Toyota branded bearing? I can likely source a Koyo, Timken, FAG, etc. easier through work.

The OE number I ordered off of eBay was easy enough and arrived quite quickly considering where it shipped from.

Honestly too soon to tell, only have a couple hundred miles on it but just based on build quality of the unit and the name tilton carries I feel a lot better about having it in my truck.

My quill didn’t snap. I cut that sucker off (regretfully so) to run the now obsolete URD fix-u hydrobearing a few years back. Obviously knowing what I know now I would’ve steered clear from that setup but back then I was naive enough to think that URD was the answer to everything Tacoma. Definitely learned the hard way that’s not the case.

 

Okay, that's fair. Did your OG URD hydro setup fail like the Clutch Masters unit? Or just impossible to get parts to service it now?

 

Got the bearing ordered. I searched far and wide locally through auto part suppliers and bearing suppliers alike, but didn't have any luck. I ended up ordering it from https://partsouq.com/ in Dubai as it was cheaper and way faster than shipping to Canada from eBay. I placed the order last night and was notified this morning that it had been shipped. We'll see if this website delivers.

@BillDaCat8 I just noticed from your photos that it looks like only half of the bearings inner race actually get's seated on the bushing/piston. I know that the force applied to the bearing is axial in this case (parallel with the piston), but ain't that still bad? Am I missing something?

There’s plenty of meat there to hold things together. Certainly the Tilton piston wasn’t designed for this exact bearing. But, it works fine with the collar to adapt it.

 

Gotcha. I might tweak my bushing design. We'll see when I get the parts in hand.

EDIT 1: The bearing arrived. 5 days to get it from Dubai... Wow! That's awesome. Mine is a Nachi bearing in a Toyota box, so you may as well order the Nachi bearing off of the PartSouq website and save yourself a cool $5.

EDIT 2: Kirk cleared up my part number confusion on the Tilton pieces and recommended I order through Summit. FYI, for the Canadians reading this, Summit Racing has free shipping over $99 right now and duties were around $30 to land it all in British Columbia.

Ordered the FJ pedal shopping list a few weeks back through a friend of a friend who's a parts guy at a Lexus dealership to avoid the rediculous Canadian markup/closed border crossings. It was supposed to take up to a month to come in.

So between the Tilton and Toyota orders I'm just sitting here patiently waiting for the parts to pour in by mooseback.

 

Progress Update #1
All parts have now arrived. Took my measurements for my bushing design and drew it up on the computer. Pretty much 1/3 of the bearing race is unsupported when seated on the piston, so I'm going to add a bit more support to my version just to be safe. I'll be going with 6061 aluminum now that I've got it hand because I realize that the piston itself is actually aluminum so we don't have to worry about future corrosion issues in this case.

Next step is getting my drawing to my amigo with the CNC lathe to whip it up the bushing for me and I'll begin working on all the other bits.

 

@BillDaCat8 do you still have that RA60F bell housing kicking around? Would you be able to grab these measurements for me? If not I'll try hunting down a local taco guy with one kicking around.

@BillDaCat8need a few more confirmations from ya...

1) Can you confirm that the 34mm hole for the slave cylinder is the diameter same on the RA60F bell housing? And approximately how thick those aluminum half-moons plugs are? Now that I've got all the Tilton parts in front of me, I've realized that idea of modifying the silicon taper plug is not going to work in the slightest. I'm going to 3D print some half-moons myself since we have extreme shipping delays due to flooding where I live right now.

2) Could you also confirm what length bolt you have in this picture and how much you have sticking out roughly? I'm browsing catalogues at my auto parts store for rubber/polyurethane bump stops on a stud but I think they're all going to be way too tall/wide to be useful.
