3rd Gen E-Brake Failure

Hey guys, Recently I have discovered a defect on my 2019 TRDOR (MT).
I've lightly searched the forum and could not find related posts. So I wanted to post this issue and see if anyone else has run into this before.

What happened is I parked my truck in the garage and engage the parking brake. Upon the next time I hop in the truck and drop the park brake handle and put it in first. The brake is still engaged and I cannot move the vehicle. Both times I had to get my floor jack out and lift the rear end, and engage/disengage the parking brake multiple times to eventually get it to release while knocking the rear wheels by hand. It appears to me that the left wheel is the wheel with the problem. I will link a video below of the second time this happened. I have not followed up with Toyota yet at this moment.

Luckily both times were at home and I was able to remedy the issue. After the first time I took it to the dealer and they could not recreate this problem and saw no problems with the parking brake upon inspection. I want to know if anyone else has experienced this.

Very common, typically its in the winter, they released a TSB that addresses this when water enters the drums, I'm surprised the dealer didn't use that TSB to at least try and resolve the issue for you.

 

I'm unfamiliar: TSB is?

Technical service bulletin. It's a plug that goes in the rear axle. Make sure to ask for it during the cold months.

i had this happen on my old '11 F150. The parking brake mechanism was frozen with rust. Rust may not be the issue here, but might be worth looking at it for any rust or something that is causing it to stick. And getting that plug can't hurt!

 

Had my drums replaced yesterday on my 2021. Apparently the ebrake cable can come too tight from factory. I'm hoping my fuel mileage improves a bit

 

By any chance, did you wash the truck or play in a puddle and put it away wet? It is common for the shoes to stick to the drums from corrosion if they are not dried off... if you did, it is a good to go drive the truck and get the brakes warmed up to dry them out. I see this happen frequently with the commercial vehicles I work on. The longer they sit the worse the stick gets...

Same here, happened twice after washing. I now drive around the block after washing and hasn’t happened in the past 2 years.

Never happens from rain, only water sprayed directly…

 

OP.. why are you using the ebrake? i'm pretty sure your garage isnt poured at a 45* angle... you should be leaving the truck in gear.

 

This is the same practice I now use to avoid the issue.

It's safe practice to use your parking brake and leave the vehicle in gear. Regardless of the surface being level or graded

 

Can't say I've ever used the ebrake on any of my vehicles unless parked on a grade, even then I forget to use it, lol.

 

no... you don't need both. especially when the thing is on level ground. if it was an auto would you also be putting it in park and pulling the ebrake?

 

You have never seen the park pall in an automatic transmission, or seen a vehicle roll away from a slight hill because the compression alone wouldn't hold it then...
