:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch People! Well, finally, just in time for the monologue on the Late Show, the promised rain started. 3.47" overnight, and still raining lightly now. Happy to say everything that is greenhouse is still in place. And, man, I am sore! DAY OFF! Can go to the store for more little pieces parts, and beer. Almost out!

Haircut tomorrow, so another recovery day. That's OK, supposed to rain through the weekend. Be good, everybody!

I see all the projects and work going on in this thread and I feel like such a slacker. And I am 100% ok with that. :)

My father-in-law lost his home in the Scripps Ranch fire.

The fire department had set up cameras to record the fire once they had everyone out.

He had a sealed attic, no ridge vents, but the fire was so intense the heat caused combustion inside the home. It burned inside out. A ton of dried eucalyptus trees were in the canyon behind his home, created the heat. Cameras failed due to the heat but captured enough to tell the story.

There was fused glass embedded into the concrete where the kitchen was. The fire was so hot, it collapsed the walls of his pool. Just crazy to see the footage.

What?!? Monstrosity? Well, I'll have you know that it was
    • An extremely effective sun magnifier, capable of melting any vegetable in the TX summer
    • An extremely effective device for capturing insects destructive to said plants
    • A box that takes three fans that struggle to maintain +10*F over summer heat
    • An extremely ineffective structure for overwintering plants when it freezes here
    • A box that a complete interior wrap of bubble wrap and a heater to not protect our plants.
    • A beautiful jewel box of death
For years, I had an ugly metal frame, with an opaque plastic cover (which rotted away every 2 years). It's job in the winter was to protect the potted pool plants - which it did admirably. Stripped during the warm season to it's shelves and frame, it was a home for vegetable. When I retired, and put the shed up, I wanted something a little less third world. There is a large FB user group (that was small when I started), and the wife's friend had one. Now there are 1000's users. As it turns out, until you get a large one, a 6' x 8' like mine is suitable for cutting/potting/starting, or decorated for a she-shed (in nicer climes).

As you might can tell, these are built by one piece/assembly holding the next. Until you are done, a good breeze will tear it apart for you. Also, JUST long and wide enough I could not make an exoskeleton for the raise the roof effort. I had to make it inside. The whole point is to a LOT more ventilation on all sides - hopefully to alleviate some of the heat issues. It will still require shade cloth, and likely the roof fans at minimum. And I will probably replace the South side (left in the front view) wall pieces with the same material as the roof (which is opaque, so defeating the "pretty" view).

I'll be putting foam board insulation inside during October, and I am replacing the little box space heater with an oil filled radiator. Of course, the fans and heater are on a controller, and the fans even have a photocell control circuit I built this summer so that they don't run all night long!

Too expensive to throw away, nothing better in the price range, a custom wood structure is still too expensive (at this time), too much to give up without trying all I can

Well my plan was to finish the front trim on the garage this weekend after work on Saturday and get the face of the trim boards painted so the roofers could do their thing. But they are now calling for rain Saturday afternoon through Monday, grrr. So I worked a short 9 hour day at work and came home and tarped the roof off so I do t have to worry about the rain.
    1 side done......
    20210929_180646.jpg
Both sides done and whole roof is covered.
    20210929_182942.jpg
I used plastic capped nails to anchor it, figured they would also be easy to remove.
    20210929_182948.jpg
    It's a wrap!
    20210929_184500.jpg
Ieft the front overhang short and tucked it under so I can roll it back a little to rework the front trim, a lot of it will be replaced.

Yes it is at my age, lol. At least I'm not as sore today and the worst of it is done for me. Some trim in the front, some painting, and then the roofers can do their thing. Oh and I have a pile of wood to cut up and burn and I need to get the trailer to the dump to empty it.

I am just tired looking at the projects you guys are doing. I will be busy next spring, the good lord willing and the price of lumber dropping.

How sad is this: I have been trying to catch an extra hour of sleep every night this week to get ready for a Brooks and Dunn concert this Saturday night.

    Everyone enjoy your day.

LOL... I'm building a 24X24, nine foot ceiling inside, garage by myself. First wall up yesterday. Maybe I shouldn't mention it. I don't see it as hard work, I see it as fun. The twelve foot 6X6s can be problematic though when you have to take them out of their holes several times because they aren't exactly dug perfectly, lol.

Yeah, it IS fun when you plan it, get started, and get finished! Sometimes, it's that "middle stuff" :annoyed: that's gets ya'!

Just a PSA. Had Covid booster yesterday. I hope someone got the plate number off the truck. First one was bad. Second one nothing. I guess after six months the body starts all over. I’m going back to bed now.

I love building new projects like that. Although I am a little slower now than I used to be and take more breaks, but I still enjoy it. I need to build my Betty a garden shed, maybe next year.

I'm pretty sure "Slow" is my middle name at this point. Digging the holes by hand is interesting but I take it a foot at a time. And I've added a new tool to my requirements that I never had as a younger man. A folding chair. It gets used for sitting when I feel it necessary... but it's also handy so I can put stuff on it and not bend down so much.

    So loft project is done.
    Ladder done
    Ladder pivot done.
Took 3 days for me to figure out how I wanted to secure the ladder.
Went through all sorts of ideas and stuff.
So finally settled on the most simple.
Wood support with quick release pins.
