I believe I've posted this before but for those of you who don't want to buy or use a spring compressor, here is an alternative option:

You essentially use the weight of the truck and a jack under the LCAs to compress and remove/install the new spring. I installed mine a couple months ago using this method and had no issues.

My old man was a front end alignment guy - this is always how we did it when I was a kid. The first time someone mentioned a spring compressor, I was confused because this method is honestly, very straight-forward.

@tonered clued me into this method a while back, definitely the route I would go. Cheap spring compressor scare the hell out of me. Only one I would use is the expensive wall mounted kind.

The jack method is a safe, piece of cake for our particular setup.

I used the jack method this morning. The only scary part was reading some of these comments lol. Super easy, and felt much safer than some spring compressors I've used.

I totally believe you guys that the jack method is safe. What I fail to understand is the perceived unsafe-ness of using a spring compressor.

It's not exactly unheard of for one of these to come loose and slip while tightening down one side, launching the top hat or spring itself directly at your face at 500mph. The only "safe" spring compressor IMO are the wall or stand mounted kind that evenly compress the spring.

I've used both DIY methods on prior vehicle. I prefer the jack method–I agree with others that it at least seems safer.

Interested readers need not look further than Google Video search "spring compressor fail compilation" to learn more. Dozens of videos capturing injury or near miss due to equipment failure or user error.

Rare as it may be, still not worth my eye, blunt head/chest trauma, or worse.

Some shots of these springs with an AAL and 285s

With my setup (bumper+winch) the AAL gives it about an inch of rake unloaded and I'm perfectly happy with that.

Been using spring compressors for years...don't put you face in front of the spring! Is it safe? I've not killed myself in the past 20+ years working on Jeeps and Yotas!? I chalk this up to internet conjecture and dumb people who don't understand physics and spring compressors.

Have you ever just tightened down only one side? It will probably explode in your face. Be smart...tighten one side a bit. Then tighten the other side the same amount. The problem is when you tighten down one side too far and it exceeds the compressors ability to grip the actual coil. It then becomes a projectile. Be smart. Understand how the compressor works.

I've calculated an average of about 17 with a lot of mountain driving and trail use since I put the 285s on. I have gotten ~20 with straight highway mountain driving though.
