Synthetic oil change every 10k?

LOL, come on by anytime Sam but remember to bring the beer! Being semi-retired now, I have lots of time on my hands and like I said I enjoy working on cars!

You can get away with that on a 90's engine, but recent Toyota engines use low tension rings, and 12k~50k oil changes will make it an early oil burner.

I did do a few lab analysis in the past. I don't have those results handy (if at all), so I cannot tell you the interesting numbers. I do distinctly remember that each report came back with, and I quote: "Oil good for continued use." That was what I wanted.

I also knew an associate who owned a small spectro-analyzer. He would test my oil on request as often as I could remembered to bring a sample. That was nice.

The maint records I posted are from a '93 Civic VX (the 55 mpg version). But my RX-3SP went to 270k (then stolen); '82 Old diesel was over 285k (parent's car, I left home so total unknown), '83 Cutlass (diesel) traded at 29?K (cuz MN winters & lost a glowplug. sucker would not start easy after that!), '87 Corolla at 307K (rusted out in MN), Civic at 297K & climbing...

The video does not address using synthetic oil. His reason for the rings sticking (& going downhill from there) is due to sludge. Syn don't produce sludge.

 

Nice Marketing claim. Did Mobil test the oil in EVERY engine configuration or just a few???

Although, the Mobil 1 may be good. I have to wonder if Mobil knows more about my engine than the folks who designed it, tested it, engineered it and wrote the Maintenance schedule based on the results of the design and testing.

The interesting thing about Marketing claims.

The claim only needs to be supported by a repeatable test and data from 1 (one) sample.........

After that, the consumer can believe or assume the "benefit" will apply to his need.

 

Bs! All oils can sludge. Condensation and/or Unburnt fuel causes sludge. Try to get the facts before posting more BS.

 

You're calling BS on the manufacturers of the oil. Not me. They can confirm it.
Unburnt fuel evaporates (as long as you get the engine hot at all).
Condensation foams up (also will evaporate at high temps). The low oil temp in an engine is the whole reason short trips are derogatory to long engine life.
In fact the combustion by-products contain sulfur and when that mixes with the condensation it creates sulfuric acid. The reasoning behind the Base being added to the oil (TBN = Total Base Number) is to neutralize the acid.
Synthetics don't sludge. Sludge typically results from oxidation, paraffin or asphalt based oil, and owner added additives. Get a quality syn oil that is made molecule by molecule and not by modifying a petroleum oil (a para-synthetic).

 

No....not what I said at all. I said a 0w16 is more viscous (thicker) at cold startup than a 0w20 is at operating temperature.

 

But Toyota has every motivation to tell you to change the oil MORE often.

There was a time when cars needed the oil changed more often. That time has passed.

Looks like we need to hear your "facts".
I had toyota during famous sludgegate. If I recall correctly, the issue was with using conventional oil, extended oil change intervals and specifics of engine operating temps.
I think it was the time when toyota extended their oil change intervals to 5k using primarily Castrol conventional at their dealerships. I remember when they did a switch to semi-synthetic, cause I asked them if this ok to go from conventional to semi. I, too, was full of myths..

 

Must just be Calgary then. That’s the smell I associate with springtime in Alberta from the 17 years I’ve been living and working here.

 

Given that 95% of oils found at the parts store are not synthetic, but Hydrocracked group III(including Mobil1), you are using deception to make a point.

Also, for the most part, the base does not break down, the additives package breaks down(depletes), even in real group 4/5 synthetics.

I worked in labs at Chevron Richmond refinery for over 20 years. I know what I'm stating is true, and I know enough to see thru a BS'ers lies.
