They will weld very nice if you practice. Here are some of the first welds I made with mine after not welding stick for 13 years. 7018AC rod. It also makes some nice welds with 6013.

 

About the only good thing I can think of for those TS welders is once I MIG welded, I was never stick welding again.

Seriously, think about MIG welders. The difference is unmeasurable.

 

I used an ESAB Migmaster 250 at my work.

At home I have a MillerMatic 135 (?) that I bought at least 20 years ago, fixed a lot of mower decks and rust holes in car bodies. I would like to become proficient with the stick "just because".

 

He also gave me about 50 pounds of 6011 rod so that is what I work with.

After using a MIG for years the 6011 is pretty handy for rusty, crappy things that come along like the oil tank chicken cooker the neighbor brought over that was pretty much built of rust holding hands.

 

I ran MIG, spool gun MIG on aluminum, SS, and steel and stick in the shops I worked in for 20 years. We still ran stick ~30% of the time, even with a pile of MIG welders.

For me it isn't worth it to have a bottle when I can weld just as good with flux core or stick.

 

Well, shit! Block gasket took a shit! Was hoping it was the oil cooler o-ring. No such luck.

I guess this motor gets to come out.

It's not entirely bad. I did discover a crack in the frame under all the grime. With motor out it'll be cake to weld it up on both sides.

A have found some sketchy wiring that I'll be able to clean up proper.

I still need to figure out the radar fuel gauge...I think. Not sure how that works. I found the sending unit in 2 pieces. I don't know if there is supposed to be a float in the tube.

Before I messed with it the digital fuel gauge read full all the time. Since I put it back together it now reads empty and the tank is full.

 

Oh yeah, I think I knew that. Guess i forgot.

 

I’ve got a Hobart 140 running flux and a Lincoln 180 set up for MIG. I use them both about 50/50 just depending on the wind and whichever one happens to be closer. I like flux for blasting through rusty metal on little jobs like the mower deck and such

 

Finished burning the diamond grate yesterday, put trailer up on lift, to help with not bending/hunching over to finish grinding welds down.

 

Replaced outer axle seals and 1 outer bearing on our NH TC40D.

Fun little project. I was thinking that the gears on these would need shims and backlash and all of that like a vehicle's differential gears but these are pretty low tolerance and very beefy.

 

I did a little tedious project that saved me $70 or so. Cub taillights are $80-100 each. The left one is always messed up due to being below the gas fill neck, getting gas on it and having the gas can leaned on it.
I had 2 decent right lights and made a right one into a left. They have back up lights so I had to paint the existing one with clear red paint and cut a spot to put another back up lens in it since it shifted left. They won't just flip upside down--top and bottom are different

DIssassembled the lens from base


Cut a new back up lens hole and countersink cut the back to let the lens sit flush with the face.



Glued a crack all the way across the lens with DAP brand ethyl cyanoacrylate with a primer then glued the lenses in with e6000 glue


Painted the extra lens with clear red paint



Glued the lens back in the base.

I really admire folks who can do tedious projects like this -- I don't have the fine hand skills -- or the patience.

Before the summer, you couldn't even walk into this corral, it had 9 years of overgrowth on it, different story today, disc and seeding in some winter rye.

 

I am most definitely #1, as far as #2 -- those days are behind me... I just don't have the energy to challenge myself anymore.
