Is this switch supposed to have a gasket?

I have a 2010 Tacoma sport quad cab, 4x4,V6 with a manual transmission. My reverse lights only work when they want to, so I'm going to order a new switch as both the camera and backup lights work fine when it works, but neither one works when it doesn't . My question is, is that switch supposed to have a gasket similar to the oil drain plug ? Or at least some type of gasket? And do they usually come with one?

IIRC the threads have a sealant applied from factory but it's been a few years since I replaced a reverse light switch.

I want to say I put a thin crush washer gasket on mine as I didn't see one and figured it should have one but the 1/16" was enough spacing away from the actuation rod that the switch wouldn't engage.

Just pull the old one out and install the new one in the same configuration as to how the old one came out.

For what it's worth if it still works sometimes it's probably not the reverse position switch you may just need to disconnect and clean all the contacts in the plugs of the system, pack them with dielectric grease after you do to help displace any water or sediment that gets past the plug seal.

I have another question....when you pull the switch out, will it let the fluid out as well ? Or is the switch above the normal fluid level?

Can't say for sure, but I am fairly certain it is above the manual tranny oil level.

It is above the fluid level. At least mine was. If I remember correctly the new one I installed had a washer on it

So I put the new one in the same way the old one came out..no washer. Stupid me forgot to check and make sure it worked right before I put the truck back on the ground....turn on the key, reverse lights and camera are on all the time... . Cheated and drove it up a little bank to raise the center of the truck, tossed the washer on, works great now...

Wow, I' surprised that washer made a difference relative to location but it obviously does. Good deal you got it fixed.

I was too....you wouldn't think that little bit ( 1/8th of an inch MAYBE ? ) would make the difference.
