My point is the shortcut isn't saving a ton of time over the other fix. You'll probably be okay either way. But I don't know what you have planned and the miles and terrain involved so I can't recommend it. This is an afternoon (with a snack) worth of work.

You're probably right. I mean, for me it won't be an afternoon, since every time I've messed with the leaf springs, it's been a royal PITA, but you're right that the last time I cut off the shock mounts and rewelded those in the correct location, it wasn't more than a day...and I've certainly got more experience now. The key for me - as always - is that I have to be able to roll the truck into the garage at night; else it might not be there in the morning.

So yeah, I'm going to want to buy those perches from you if I'm going to be cutting mine off. Can you mail them over to me (unless you're going to be in the area) so I can get to work? Tell me what I owe ya, or if you just want me to order a set and have them sent your direction (at whatever speed they travel at from Ruff Stuff).

    no way.

Putting new perches on is way more work that just welding a piece of tubing on the axle as it is.

I don't think it'll really "help" that much. But might be enough of a band aid to get Dan there until the new housing arrives. I think you're plan is fine Dan. You know its very compromised, but it only needs to last a bit anyways. So fuck it.

My mom is currently over visiting for the weekend, I can send em over with her and she can leave em outside their house in Renton if you want. You can send me another pair whenever, they were for my Sequoia axle, I wasn't planning on using em anytime soon.

I mean at that point, just keep driving, why even weld it.

That’s what I thought the fear of running it another 10k was…

I’d just keep it topped off then

Personally I'd worry more about the axle tube failing and not the perch coming off. It's obvious that the crack has penetrated the whole way though and by flexing the housing more, the crack with propagate further around.

I think Dan idea will be good enough. With the 3" pipe welded to either side of the perch it'll help disperse some of the load in that area. It took me more than a day to do. Not that I was in a hurry but wanted to make sure I did it right and even then I messed up my pinion angle the first time.

Preventing oil from contaminating the weld will be a critical part.

In all seriousness, I noticed mine before a trip, did a 3k mile trip, and it was still fine. I think the chance of a serious failure of the axle tube is highly unlikely.

I would just pull the ubolts one side at a time, weld all the way around the perches, and send it for your next couple trips before the Diamond shows up.

See, this is exactly the discussion I hoped to have happen. I don't know what I'll do yet, but the variation in opinion is what I was after. Or, I was curious if there'd be variation. If there wasn't, then there'd clearly be a right answer, hahahaha!

Cheapest 3", .25 wall tubing I've found is $85/foot. Damn. Might need to go check the remnant bin that's half an hour away.

honestly for what you're doing, .25'' wall is probably overkill. I would definitely check the cut offs pile to see what they have and use whatever

If you weren't about to get a diamond, I would go with Ryan's method. Given all you need is a temp fix, I think that's overkill.

I'm 100% with you on the "better" fix if I wasn't getting a new housing. Ryan's method seems fantastic. Now I'm wondering if I want to do it anyway just to try it/for the practice, even if it's overkill.

If you have the 3.5" perches and ubolts go for it. I think you could do that in a day if you were committed and especially if you had another set of hands.

Just pull the axle though. Trying to grind and weld those cracks won't be easy with it under the truck. You'll already be pulling the ubolts, so all you have left is the brake line, ebrake cable, and elocker wiring.

His trips could use the drama. They are pretty cookie cutter boring without some more truck explosions :luvya:

    So true

You always remember the "bad" times much more vividly than all the good times. Which I mean for me they are good times but when it's sucks it stays there longer.

Which is why I enjoy the suck ha
