I'm having a discussion with a female coworker about break ups. One of her friends was dating a guy that turned into a long relationship, and now she has decided she wants to break it off. She wants to fly to his destination to do so. I told her I would rather she tell me over the phone...

    What say you???

Just change your FB relationship status to "single". He will get the hint. Easy.

If you're far enough to where you have to fly to get there, phoning is the better option.

I also imagine it depends on how long they've been together. Anything over 3 years continuous, get your ass on a plane and do some 'splaining.

I can understand the thinking behind 'in person', because under ordinary circumstances that is the best way to go. Breaking up through a text is an asshole thing to do no matter what. But, having been in a long distance relationship, I know that if she goes there and breaks up it will just be awkward, because she has to either pretend nothing is wrong and do it at the last minute, or break the bad news and then have to hang around until her flight is due to go out.
I vote for phone, in this case.

Piggybacking off what others said, depends on how long. If it's been serious, fly over to really explain and say goodbye, otherwise he might already be half expecting it to not workout and a call would suffice. Never do over text. It's better just to ignore the person, imo.

ok so i did not vote for in person but i can say whoever did, the only reason to break up with someone in person is because you want to be with them still and u just want to see how far they will go to keep you.

    over the phone...

also on the other hand if my woman was dumping me id prefer she waste her money and her time to fly to me to get slapped hard

jk i wouldnt slap a woman ever but i would feel better knowing she wasted her money

This is So True. Not to mention what is she going to tell him the reasoning is for flying down. She's going to get the guy all excited and then absolutely Destroy him. I say phone it in that way your not putting him on that nasty roller coaster.

My thoughts too, and maybe if I knew she was coming to break up with me I might arrange for her to walk in on me and some slut, just to really show her what a waste it was.

This is true too, guy gets excited, he has been faithful the whole time apart, thinks he is going to get some action and then bang.

If I was breaking up, I would call, but double standard or whatever you want to call it, bitch better fly to break up with me.

Do it over the phone. That way there is not that ackward situation after the break-up. The last thing I would want to do is spend hundreds of dollars to fly somewhere and break-up with someone.
