Haha, it just sounds so funny to me as I've had a block heater in every car I've owned in the last 40 years. The only exception was when I purchased my 2020 GR Supra last summer. I looked for 30 minutes before I realized it doesn't come with one lol

To Allocate is to apportion for a specific purpose or to particular persons or things. To Distribute/Sell.

If Toyota did not use an Allocation process to distribute product to their Dealers, What Process would you recommend? A Lottery System? Bribing Factory Reps. (I believe that actually has happened). Or Just give Every Dealer the Same Amount of Product REGARDLESS of Market Population, Market share, Regional Differences, Etc. A Non Allocation system doesn't sound like much of a Dealer Incentive Builder. Dealers value their Allocations like Gold, because they have earned their Allocations.

Allocations do not determine whether or not you can “Order” a Tacoma. A Dealer, because of the Allocation process, may have a better/worse allocation selection compared to other Dealers, but that doesn’t prevent a person from placing an “Order”. Just find a Dealer with an Allocation you want, or as in Your words, “close to what I wanted”.

If you don’t “Order”, How can you be sure you will get “close to what I wanted"?

Ordering is agreeing to buy according to the specifications of an order.

Your purchase of “close to what I wanted” seems to meet the definition of an “Order”

If you did not “Order” your Tacoma, Are you saying you would have taken any Color, Transmission Type, Trim, Model, Options, etc.? Is that what you told the Salesperson? You gave the Salesperson no Specifications?

Of course a person can chose to Not “Order” and take anything the Dealer would give them.

I think you are confusing a “Special Order” with the term ”Order”.

I agree, you cannot “Special Order” or "Custom Order" a Toyota.

That's the wording that was missing " special order" "custom order" If I don't order a truck from my dealer I won't get one unless I buy one off the lot. I order stuff off Amazon all the time. It doesn't make it special, it's just an order but I get what I want or close to. I think everyone is making too much of, or over thinking this order stuff. People should just be happy that you could get one.

Because it was the only Tacoma on the lot, and it was the only one that wasn't a SR5 for the same price. Chip shortage is only going to drive up 2022 prices. Couple that with demand and my guess is by this time next year 43k will be considered a bargain.

I have a deposit down on an allocated truck. $2K over MSRP, and that's very low compared to every dealer I've found somewhat local. (I'm only talking trucks that exist, with vins. I'm sure I could bargain on a 2022 if I wanted to wait).

I haven't even paid invoice for a new car in over 15 years. To include a 5th gen 4R and a TRDpro Sequoia that I bought during earlier pandemic.

Trying to add some perspective for the take it or leave it nature and total lack of inventory in some markets.

Yeah this OR was the only one that I could find that was local. Buddy of mine bought a 2018 OR in the sand color new for 32k. It's crazy how things are going.

Your good, that’s how it works. You know if any customer or their dealer had the option to order a truck through Toyota you would think they would have that on their build page and allow you to select a dealer to have it sent to instead of the request a quote and then choose a dealer. Unfortunately that’s not how it works. Regional is who has all the available allocations for all dealers in that region. Dealers will then see a list twice a month and on that list they pick from what allocations are available. Remind you of all the dealers in each region as well picking that same build and how ever many are scheduled to be built in that color and configuration. Depending on their sales or what they are requesting will determine who gets what. They request certain builds and colors and if they have those on the list then regional will either approve or deny it for dealers. They can continue to request those each month and at some point and time it will most likely get approved but it’s not always that simple. This has been explained but sometimes people are stubborn. These trucks have been scheduled to be built months and months in advance. With more configurations and colors than you can think of. But they do this for a reason and that’s why they are the best at manufacturing.

So once they get those allocations approved then they are scheduled with a temp vin for production. Once it’s built it gets the permanent vin. If that dealer already has that information then they have already been approved that allocation.

Unfortunately there are members that have tried this method and wanted to order a truck and specific color and weren’t able to get that option from that dealer. Eventually that dealer probably could have got one allocated but with the timeframe there is no telling on how long that can take. It’s really up to their regional folks to determine what they can and can not get. That’s why members have to settle on a different color and will be asked if they will take a different color because that dealer took what truck they can because they we’re scheduled to be built already and that color was the only one available and allocated to them already.

This is the process on how it works. If your dealer tells you he can order you one in and you fell for it then you were just bamboozled by that dealer on a sales tactic. It’s what they have reverted to with everything going on. They take a deposit and say they will order it and they have you locked in with your deposit. Don’t get my wrong, there are dealers that have had allocations already lined up that met some customers wants or needs and we’re already approved prior to them even going in there but you can not ORDER a truck. I thought the same thing after reading post on here and then I started doing my research. After around 15 dealerships and some talking with a guy from corporate I learned quite a bit.

Like about GST, SET, and the 10 regional offices. GST and SET are private distributors for their region and the other ten are spread out across the US. They control who gets what. Each dealer is their own entity and Toyota has no control over what they can and can not do. They really are only there to show face when there is a problem between customer and the dealer and try to help resolve the issue. Other than that, they do have standards just like any manufacturer has for their dealers like appearance of the store or rebates but they don’t control those dealers. I know this will have some negative feedback but that’s how it works. Dealers control their own sales, finance, service, and parts. Yes Toyota does control warranty work and all that but that’s not dealer specific. Just figured if I didn’t throw that in there then I would be told corporate has to approve warranty work or something to that extent.

    That’s enough for one post.

Unfortunately you have been in the same boat as many others but you got a truck and hopefully your happy with it.

Sorry about the long response to your post. It’s easier this way. Trying to go back to beat the same damn dead horse seemed like a waste of time. Yet I somehow still did.

If you can get an allocation far enough out that's still not been built you can make modifications to what they make. I don't know what the limits are on what can and cannot be changed, but there are things that can be changed before it goes through production. My dealer tried to get an allocation before the one I ended up getting but the dealer it was allocated to wasn't willing to give it up, then they managed to get the one I ended up buying. They were able to edit it a little and I got what I wanted. Color may be one of the things that can't be changed. I waited about 45-50 days.

I disagree with the extended warranty not being worth it. I will say just the powertrain extend warranty for sure a no as that part of toyota is almost bulletproof but the electronics part is another story. If you have a base line sure not to much to worry about but when you add tech package, 360 cameras and all the bells paying 2g extra for 100000 mile warranty on a 50k truck will pay for itself with one repair on the electric/computer system. And yes all of the electronics are covered I have no exclusions. So yes its extra cash but since all my ad ons were done at time of purchase they are all covered.

First reached out to the dealer Wednesday @ lunch. They called me back Thursday night @ close after somebody else's financing fell through and I picked up my 2021 TRD Pro Saturday AM @ MSRP. They wouldn't budge on price or throw in any accessories but I was at least able to get 10% over KBB for my trade that had a check engine light on.

I still can't decide if anybody's financing actually fell through or if that was just a story to get me to not try to negotiate them down on the price of the truck but I'm feeling pretty lucky to get a TRD Pro w/o any 2nd sticker within 4 days of my first call to the dealer.

Play multiple dealers off one another. I got one to commit to msrp. Then asked another if they could do better. They did. Then I went back to the first one to see if they could beat it. They did. I didn’t get a huge discount but did save a bit this way.

That's similar to what my wife and I did with her Subaru in 2019. We decided exactly which package we wanted, emailed a few dealerships for quotes ("I live in [place] but I'm willing to drive for the right deal"), and then took the best offer back to the local dealership we wanted to buy from. You can do the same thing with your trade-in to make sure you're getting the best total price and not just shuffling numbers from one side of the sheet to the other.
