I’ve seen a few posts saying you can’t flat tow a Tacoma, if I call AAA and they bring a regular tow truck, would that be fine? Since one end would be up so technically not a “flat-tow.” Or should I request a flatbed? It’s a 4x4. I’ve never had it towed so I’m not exactly sure how to go about it. It’s exactly 6.6 miles to the dealership. I think it would be ok, just want to double check before the dealership finds something else to blame.

    • Interesting update.
Turns out the fuel injectors went out, AGAIN. This is the second time in under 50k miles. Except the dealer just told me that fuel injectors are a 3yr 36k mile part, and I’m at 48k miles. They’re trying to get it approved through toyota corp. since I’ve been back n forth with multiple idling/misfire issues for some time now. Hopefully it gets approved.. just odd to have fuel injectors fail twice in under 50k miles.

    • 3rd update. Dealer said there’s water in the fuel.. currently contemplating fixing it myself in lieu of paying them $1,100
    • New update (page 5, #100) or see below.

Most tow trucks are flat decks now. I rarely see old style tow trucks bringing anything to my dealer.

If you're using AAA just request a flat bed....

Your Operators Manual gives some pretty good information concerning towing the vehicle (see attached pages).

When you call the tow company, just tell them what they are towing and your concerns. Back your conversation with an email.

If the tow company damages the truck.....its their nickel. Might be a bugger to prove. Suggest to take pictures of the tow truck (include lic plate & driver), your truck before and after loading.

Flat towing or towing with the front wheels off the ground will do the same damage. The tailshaft of the transmission will spin. The pump to provide lubrication is spun when the engine is running. Not when the rear shaft is spinning. You could cause serious damage to the transmission in even a short tow.

Simple. Put it on the hook from the rear. So what if the front wheels are on the ground. They free spin unless in 4 x 4.

Lol! Long story short I’ve had misfire issues for some time now. Truck will misfire, turn off, not turn on. I take it in and they can’t figure it out or “fix” something and somehow it’s happened again. Odds are the fuel pump failed again but who knows. I’m pretty fed up with it at this point and just going to sell it.

Anywhoo, this time took the longest to turn on. I was about to call AAA but by the grace of the car gods it’s on and at the dealership. I appreciate everyone’s input btw.

Have you tried.... taking it anywhere else? Some Dealers have crappy shops, some have good ones. Most independent shops are better. Unless it's a recall or a warranty repair I'd take it elsewhere

Most tow truck companies can dolly your truck if they don't have a flatbed available or the driver can disconnect your rear driveline. However the company will usually charge a more to dolly your truck and the drivers absolutely hate doing it.

Oh yeah good ideal to sell a truck because it might have a bad fuel pump.

Years ago my wife's Tacoma's AC would only blow on high, her mom told her to sell it and get a new car, a $30 resistor and 20 minutes of work had the issue resolved!

For the record, we had just started dating and 18 of the 20 minutes was me trying to wedge my big body in upside down to be able to get to the damn thing lol

I saw an RV with a new Ranger behind it being flat towed. I don't know if it was 2wd, most likely the driveshaft was disconnected.
