hello TW, long time lurker. new to the forum, but would like to personally thank yall for your knowledge and ongoing help! big hello and thanks to tim the tool man, his youtube channel and Q&A have been a big help too.

been want'n to install a LSD vs open diff for years. my 01 silverado has the g80 eaton LSD (clutch plates) love it for a work truck. so i started with looking up the axle code on door jamb (BO4A). i have 8" ring 4.56 gear ratio, 12 bolt and 30 spline.

    parts ordered,

    1) eaton truetrac model# TT913A541, ordered form summit.
    2) carrier bearing kit, model CK-T100 includes

    3) other parts ordered include, 1 gal of 80w-90 PL5 gear oil and gray gasket seal.

mechanic friend owns a shop, gonna help with shims and backlash, ill install.
we bought some land in north GA, truck will be used to move form MS, construction and building.
    thanks!
    FUCK CANCER

mechanic friend helped with truetac install. i do not have the right tools for this job. highly recommend a mechanic that knows his sh!t for this part. if your not skilled (like me) pay a shop to set it up, i didnt want to piss ~$575 down the drain! also if your doing this at home have the right jacks and stands. chalk the front tires, put wheels, big logs, blocks of wood, etc. under truck while you work, think safety...sh!t happens.

tips for shade trees out there. take pics, helps ole peps like me. make sure drive shaft goes on "exactly" the way it came off! spray painted a 1/2" white line (or paint pen marks) from 3rd all the way to drive shaft carrier. while truck is torn down its a good time to grease drive shaft, clean and replace parts. test drive check nuts and bolts after ~50 mi.

Thinking about doing this for my 06 Prerunner. How is it working out on road and off road?

I'd like one of these in the back and a locker wired up to the factory switch in front.
    Nice going op

do it... best up upgrade ive done by far!
on road i dont notice it that much. only time i can feel it, is when it starts to rain and makes the road slick. you can really feel the truetrac when accelerating from a dead stop. nothing squirrelly, kinda like a posi track rear paint'n 11's.
as far as off road... it works great! ive had it on some pretty gnarly roads camping, canoeing/kayaking or just cruising ole mountain roads. just remember its a limited slip, i know my tacos limitations.
i put cooper AT's on and upgraded the suspension (old man emu 2" lift and dakar leafs) it real made a big difference in handling on and off road. love this ole truck!

I'm curious to see how it handles sand. The only time I've ever been stuck as in sand. Also have you ever had one wheel up? I heard that you could apply the break and the grounded wheel can push you out.

man you still on the fence? :notsure:
i haven't done that much sand. driven through river bottom and quarry sand with no problems, but no desert or beach sand.
no 1 wheel in the air. i keep 2 traction boards and a shovel in the truck. like i said before, i know my limitations. i wheel a jeep so i can tell you from experience, if you're gonna rock climb, deep mud/sand, climb mt. sides, etc... get a 4x4!
ill take my truck on the same terrain as my jeep, but i know when to turn back or find another route.
truetrac with 4.56 gears, OME suspension and cooper at3's im VERY confident off-road in my 2wd taco!
if you're gonna keep that truck, do it! for bout a grand it'll be the best upgrade you do... or sell it, buy a 4x4 and get your :spending:

I know I just need to make up and do it! With the idea of getting a first gen Tundra 4x4 and starting all over. But that sound like a chore and a hassle. Not to mention you're always taking a risk on an older truck. There's a chap here selling everything you need for a 4x4 conversion. Toying with that idea as well LMAO. So you regeared at the same time?

That video was epic! The whole time I felt as though he would be stopped by the sand. But nope!

i DID NOT regear. 4.56 gear is OEM on 1st gen prerunner auto with 2.7L. got lucky on this one. it will climb steep grades no problems at all! good combo for that 4 banger.
for me it was simple. my taco is a gas (18/21mpg) saver... a gofer truck/DD.
my silverado is my tow/haul truck.
my jeep JK my big boy 4x4 toy.

truetrac is a great upgrade from a open diff.... but a 2wd truck with TT or a locker in the rear can NOT do what a 4x4 can period!
bet your truck is paid for a this is a 2nd, 3rd or 4th vehicle... right? keep the truck that you have sentimental feelings for and do the 4x4 conversion! plenty of TW members have done the conversion with no regrets. park the truck, go buy the parts, take your time and do it right! you get to have your cake and eat too... WIN WIN!!!

yeah this truck is a 2nd/3rd vehicle now. I daily drive my old trusty toyota matrix to work and sometimes take the truck. we got my wife a new 2022 Nissan Pathfinder a few weeks ago so that's hauling the family around most of the time now. So it leaves the truck to become more of a project if I want to. Truck is our adventure/camping vehicle.

sounds like you have a great car lineup by the way! I've always wanted to grab an old 4runner and make it a 4x4 toy.

After spending the last 3 months looking for a used 4x4 truck with similar miles to mine and clean, I give up. Overpriced and beat up trucks. Mostly. $15,000 for over 200,000 miles on a 4x4 2006 Tundra is about the going rate right now on the West Coast. I've decided to install the TrueTrac and hope that it gets me through most of the easy to moderate trails that I want to get through, just to reach some cool camping spots out here in the desert and mountain regions of Southern California. Not looking to go wheeling every weekend. I'm going to call ecgs tomorrow and place the order for the entire assembled kit with 4.56 gears

same luck here too! searched junkyards, ebay, craigslist and here for a TRD e-locker... for 6 months :annoyed:
man i've seen your truck and its sound! got the lift, suspension, tires, recovery gear you'll have no problems with easy to moderate trails.
    you won't be disappointed.
hit me up with some feedback, good luck!
