Maybe it's not as bad as it looks, but I wouldn't want to mess with it. Not sure what it's not covered/protected with anything.

I'll have to take a picture of our old high school's phone room. It's horrifying, but will be hit with a wrecking ball in a couple months.

It's out in the open where anyone walking by could mess with it. I'm tempted to disconnect a wire or two to see what happens and how long it takes them to fix it.

@replica9000 depends how often that phone is used. Even more fun if it's an emergency phone or an elevator alarm one! Then you might have a nice lawsuit on your hands when it doesn't work! Here's my work's phone set-up.

The phone system at my job is glitchy. Someone will page over the intercom, and someone's voicemail will randomly start playing. Some phones just simply don't work.

We ripped all of ours out and everything’s IP phones now. Soooooo much cleaner.

Still trying to find a good use for the old frame room. Currently it’s non-janitorial storage.

@CaptAmerica That's awesome, I can't wait for that day for our stuff. We only have 400 digitals/analogs still kicking, lots of VOIP but some things like fire department, police dispatch and elevator alarms I think they will never want to change....

Just tried to install Windows 11 on my second machine and was greeted with the new system requirements and lol’d immediately. If only Creative Cloud could work in Linux I would drop these fools in a second.

Our fire, security, and door systems have their own dedicated networks and systems. When the building went through a major upgrade about 5 years ago the decision was made to remove all 2-wire and 4-wire systems. Doors and cameras are ST fiber, fire is dedicated CAT-5 (on red cables), and everything else is SC fiber to the switch and CAT-6 to the desktop.

I have a SIP trunk (with an AdTran to convert to a PRI because that's what the Avaya vendor wanted) for our normal voice lines. Fire/burglar communication lines, elevator, and fax are all still on POTS.

Nothing wrong with POTS - it’ll work when all else shits the bed.

Yup - when I add the other buildings to the SIP I'll probably leave a couple POTS lines into the systems just in case the WAN links back to the main campus go down for some reason. Plus the alarm/fax of course.

It has been good getting off POTS for most voice calls, though - the copper in this area is awful and we'd get a lot of call quality issues. Verizon techs would come and swap to a different pair but told me it'd probably be a problem again eventually because everything out on the roads is in rough shape.

We're Avaya people as well and we have the set up just with a few more trunks kicking around. Our carrier fucked us the other day but playing their ten digiting dialing change message on our calls last week without telling us.

What's the backup on that system if power goes out? That is always our people's concerns when trying to move off the old copper pairs.

Currently, the three buildings on the SIP are all basically on one campus with our own private fiber buried between them. The building that houses the network core also houses that SIP and is on UPS and generator backup power. I do have a couple POTS tied into that system as well, but fortunately the only fiber outage for that SIP that I've had (knock on wood) was the middle of the night when a pole was hit and they got out to splice it pretty quickly.

For my remote buildings that are all still on POTS, power is the bigger issue. They don't have generators so if the power goes the phone system also goes once the UPSs die. We're in the process of moving those off of old NEC Electra systems and onto IP Offices and will look at moving mostly off of POTS once that's done.
