    Guys -

what's the deal with the plug gasket or "crush washer"? I bought the truck used in 2004 from I guy I worked with, he changed the oil himself each time as the mileage-oil type-filter type-date written on the flap of a filter box indicate. There was no gasket of any kind when I bought it, or I would have found a replacement on the first oil change. Since 2004 I have done every oil change at 3000 miles over the course of about 55,000 miles and have never had a gasket on the drain bolt - ever. NOW I'm paranoid.

Is there a part number? Can you buy a bunch at once online or something? Could I just use an O ring? I've never had a leak to this point... but I'd like to keep it that way!

autozone has a pack of like 6 plastic washers for the oil drain plug for like 2 bucks or so.

Quick question, I'm sure it was asked but I didn't want to go through 21 pages to find the answer.

-Is the 5/16" tube, is that the inner or the outer diameter. Home depot has two different tubes where one is the inner and the other is the outer! Thanks for the help!

I just go to the dealer parts counter every couple years and buy a few, and keep them in a ziplock baggy with my oil filter wrench.

Never knew about that plug at the bottom of the filter holder. I'll be *&%@#$. I have been taking my oil evacuator, hooking up the air hose, and laying the suction tube in the oil filter holder to catch the oil as it comes out. Kind of like that suction tube the dentist uses. It works.

Gold Plugs LLC makes a replacement magnatic drain plug. No - I got nothing to do with them. Did buy the thing. String magnet. Can't hurt.

Thank u for this post helped me a lot. This was my first oil change for my truck. I ended up using a Fram filter and Royal Purple oil!

A little of this and a little of that.
Changed the oil & filter for the first time on my 2011 DC with the V6. Wow, after 13 years with my '98 3.4 V6, this oil change is a piece of cake. The location of the oil filter is the biggest difference. Also, so glad the Tacomas don't have the cartridge style filters like the 4.0L V6's in the 4Runners.

A big thanks to chris4x4 for his how to write up and all the answers he has provided.

synthetic or regular oil, from the factory? this question has been asked more than once. I installed an aftermarket cam in my 427 chevy. the instructions specifically stated NOT to use synthetic oil during break in. apparently the lubricating quality is that good that it does'nt allow proper break in. It may not be a cost thing, they would just add it onto the price of the vehicle.

Engines are "broken in" at the factory, and they come from the factory with dyno oil.

thats good to know. so you could drive a new vehicle home and change over to synthetic right away, if you chose to do so. not that it makes any sense, but it seems that most guys are switching to it ASAP. just bought an "09" tacoma in dec. with 2,027 mi., oil was changed once, sticker says due 4,589. I was going to do 1, maby 2, reg. oil changes before making the switch to syn. I may be wasting my time, but old habits die hard.
