Toyota Corporate and the Dealer told me to pound sand. I took the truck to my friend bodyshop and he measured the paint thickness, the hood and two front fender were in the 2 to 3 range, the doors at 3. The average thickness is 4 to 6. He told me that eventually the paint will fail on the other panels

Been noticing this spot on my hood that looks off compared to the rest of the paint. Anyone have something like this on theirs?

My hood has some cloudy-ness when looking at the right angle. It’s mostly in the center closer to the windshield.

This is what my hood looks like after a wash and quick detailer. Horrible! I am so pissed about this paint issue and the fact that it's such a hassle for Toyota to right such an obvious wrong. Thanks to all the helpful info on here so far. Also, my hood also has the same cloudy spot in the center top up by the windshield.

I haven't filed any claim yet. I went to my local dealer yesterday and spoke to a woman who was the only one of the two service managers working at the time. She told me to kick rocks ("Oh sorry your Tacoma is a 2017 and we don't discuss paint over 3 years old and you also have 70,000 miles so that's too much") and then told me to call an 800 number. When I told her something along the lines of "thanks but what I'm looking for is your help. I know that you're willing to discuss the paint on many other models with the exact same paint code going back to 2012ish which have a recall and Tacoma isn't far behind so if she could reach out to a regional rep and ask for a good will claim I would greatly appreciate it." She then didn't even bother to get up from her seat and told me to email her and the other manager some photos. I'm having the truck detailed today and I'm not going to email them, I'm going to go show up in person today and request one of them physically gets off their ass and help me out. I'm considering showing up with donuts or something, LOL.

My 2017 super white is flaking in the exact same spot. The service manager basically said the same thing, that 3yrs 30,000 and Toyota was probably not going to take care of it. Because of this and other things that have popped up this truck is the first and last Toyota I will ever own.

Copy/paste of my post on another white paint failure thread but wanted to add it here for you as well, as it might be helpful:

To those asking/hoping your warranty will cover it, this summer my dealer initially refused to look at my 2017 and said "sorry your truck is a 2017 with 70,000 miles on it, we only consider looking at paint if the vehicle is within 3-year or under 30,000 miles." However I will tell you being polite and continuing to push them will get you farther. I'm a few steps in right now, waiting to hear back from their regional rep who reviewed my vehicle. Will be sure to update this thread with any helpful info once I know more.

Here is my experience so far: step 1, detailed my truck (CLEAN) and went to my dealer service dept in person and asked them to please look at my truck but they told me trucks too old since 2017 and to kick rocks. Step 2: politely informed them of all the info I had read online, and that many other toyota models with same paint code are covered going back to 2012/2013, to which they still refused to look at the truck and gave me their card and said to email them some photos (couldn't believe they wouldn't just walk outside). When I walked out I said to myself I wouldn't settle for that b/c I figure they'll just delete the email. Step 3: wait a week, make sure truck is CLEAN, wake up early and buy a bunch of donuts, walk into service department when they open with all the donuts and let the manager know I have no intention of being a problem customer, I just wanted to bring the whole team some treats in the hopes the manager has 5-minutes to look at my truck - politely put assistant manager on the spot in front of colleagues and other customers, who is now excited for donuts and then goes to get main service manager (who of course is hidden in some back office) who comes out and reviews my truck. I show them the failing paint and the whole time be polite and just ask them to help out a loyal customer, I'm not in any rush and not going to be another problem for them - I'm on their timeline if they're willing to help. He lets me know he "knows the deal" about this paint situation and will try to work with me to help out. Step 4: They submit my info into their system and call me a month later when their regional rep will be in the area to review my truck, this happens within a month and I drop the vehicle off for them that day (CLEAN again). It's been about a month since then. I'll give them a call for an update in a few weeks if I don't receive any updates.

Part of me wanted to go into this ready to start yelling if they didn't give me what I wanted, but I've worked in retail, I've worked in the dealership industry, and I know that they deal with pissed off people all of the time and in the dealership industry, that usually doesn't get you anywhere. Kindness and patience will (usually but not always) take you much farther with these folks. Will provide updates and any additional helpful info to y'all in the future. Thanks to the rest of the folks in all of the other failing white paint threads who've provided helpful info as well.

    COOL Stuff I can't afford . . . But I bought anyway!
i just had the exact same thing on my white or. Here’s what I did and you can’t see a thing.

Go to a real automotive paint supply store and have them hand mix you the 040 (double check the code first) paint.

Use a fine grit wet sand paper and blend the paint to primer. Use rubbing alcohol or ammonia to clean the area well.

Start applying 5-6 thing coats of the paint into the chipped area.

    allow to dry completely.

use 3000 or higher and wet sand the touch up paint to flatten it to the oem paint.

Buff with clear coat safe rubbing compound.

wash and then wax the area. You won’t see it unless you’re looking for it.

Then wait for more super white paint to start chipping somewhere else and repeat.

My 2017 (traded for a 2021) was chipping on the door pretty bad. My neighbor’s truck (16-17ish) has the same issue at the door too.

Toyota dealership completed this test on my truck to verify the paint issues I had on my bed, after peeling off my truck where you can see the orange tape on the pictures. The next day I received an email that my claim was denied. That’s the most disrespectful answer I have never heard in my life. Toyota corporation doesn’t want to repaint my truck knowing they have an issue with the paint. Any suggestions?

Damn that sucks. They did that same tape method on my 2016 tacoma. And all the metal body panels peeled. They filed a claim and it got approved to repaint the whole truck. They only repainted the metal panels only. I just got my truck back the other day and the body shop had it for about 2 weeks. They also replaced all the weather seals and trims.

You're having the exact same Super White paint issues, in exactly the same place. Check under your hood along the fenders too. Toyota told me there was nothing they could do. I paid $1300 to have the affected areas repainted.
    Good luck!

I have our SW Tacoma being fixed by our local Toyota Dealership now. From what I was told today, Toyota will only fix the issues as they appear, until they receive enough "documented" complaints. By documented the Service Manager (SM) said, is people going into their local dealership and asking for a report to be filed. The rep for our area (New England) also told our SM we were the first documented case they had heard of... Obviously this is BS by the number of threads going on in here. Our SM agreed that the whole thing should be repainted but his hands are tied and he said that even calling corporate isn't going to help, as they do not believe it is a large enough issue.

As someone else mentioned they were being polite, I too have been super polite and nice, as I can only imagine the amount of crap they deal with and figure I'd rather be the "nice but firm" customer he deals with. Toyota should just be recalling the paint and having it fixed, it'll cost them less in the long run, than each of us going in and having this spot, then that spot repaired.

For us the areas are currently on the back passenger door, and the hood, with some other areas spread throughout the body but do not meet the 2" threshold for Toyota to cover it being fixed.

I also posted this in the main consolidated failing white paint thread: The post quoted below is my last update. I hadn't heard anything back since dropping off my truck for the regional rep to inspect it, so I logged online and found these notes. Does anybody have any advice at this point? Should I contact the manager at my dealer for further explanation? Thanks in advance for any advice/tips before I jump back into this fiasco.

In addition to the update above, I just noticed the paint failing on my gas cap this week. This is a joke. Any advice on what I should do next, or what the notes listed above mean? Guess I should just head back to the dealer and politely ask what they're going to do to make this right.

FYI I'm posting from Virginia and the dealership here knows about the failing white paint well.
