Which octane is everyone using

87

I dont understand why the Tacoma manual just doesn't say "use 87.". The truck isn't tuned for anything higher....it's not like it's a forced air engine...the manual should just say 87.

 

That’s a good question. An internal combustion engine actually requires less octane at a higher altitude because there is less air filling the cylinders and less cylinder pressure is produced. Of course, this assumes a naturally aspirated engine and a static timing curve.
If you went from sea level to a high pass like Tioga which is just under 10,000 ft, the octane requirement is substantially less. At one time, lower octane fuel was sold in high altitude areas. However, once you descend to a lower altitude, the octane requirement goes up.

 

It’s also an aluminum head motor and pulls heat out of the combustion chamber faster which is why it can run a higher compression ratio and not detonate.

 

Eh I use 87 because I feel like the Tacoma engines aren’t optimized to even benefit from higher octane fuels. Less money out of my pocket for the same result.

 

91, but only because I'm tuned for it. Stock tune i ran 87 and it ran just fine.

I'm running OVtune 2.0, premium, 33 inch tires.

 

I’m on 265/70/18. So pretty close to 33s. Do you see a benefit from the tune? Worth it?

 

Oh absolutely. Makes the truck so much more fun. I spin the tires on dry pavement now lol, and it doesn't hunt. @tonered is the man to go to if you have more specific questions, or the VF tuner forums.

 

JP5 or JP8. In a pinch, I'll run JP4.

 

Good parts cleaner, or to burn in kerosene lamps.

 

I currently have an OV Tune that requires premium gas but will be switching to Coyoza tune because it is M/T specific and while Coyoza does not require premium I plan to stay with it because in British Columbia Chevron sells ethanol free 94 octane.

BTW the OV Tune completely overcomes the wimpy low rpm performance of the 3.5 V6. I highly recommend getting any aftermarket ecu tune as the increase in performance is easily well worth the $.

 

91 or 93. pulls timing and runs like hot garbage on 87. but i have the 2tr-fe I4. hunts for gears and shifts like crap too due to shifting too often with 87. it holds gears much longer with 91/93.

 

You'll be fine, I ran mine on 85 without any problems before I installed the supercharger. If you know you'll be doing heavy towing or driving down to a lower altitude it won't hurt to put in a higher octane but for your normal daily driving there is no need.

 

87 OR higher. It does not say designed to run on 87 only.

With 91 and she ran like shit.

All my Japanese vehicles ran better and got better MPGs with 91 or higher E0. I’ve been using 91 E0 in my taco, even on the stock tune. No hesitations/jerkiness and whatever else people here complain about.

 

I came here just to post this video. EE always does a great job explaining some of the nuance. It's always a bit more complex than people realize.

That said, I only run E0 87 octane at 5,000-10,000 feet of elevation where I spend most of my time.
