that would be completely out of cycle of toyota to skip a mid cycle refresh of a bof vehicle and on top of that at the 8yr mark to create a whole new gen? or are they considering the 2020 slight facelift as the mid cycle refresh?

or (completely guessing here) is this to push the tacoma onto the TGNA platform sooner than later to start saving costs on having a unified platform to do bof vehicles.

very doubtful it will get a twin turbo engine. more likely a 3.5L with a hybrid option or a very detuned single turbo 3.5L

otherwise you are cutting into tundra sales.

The 3rd gen isn't completely new. It even shares the parts catalog with 2nd gen. That may have accelerated the timetable for Toyota. The other factor is the banning of combustion engines in 2030-2035, so Toyota would get less than 10 years out of this platform if they pushed it back any further.
Engine tends to be separate from "platform". Current speculation from multiple web sites is the 2.4L turbo I-4 similar to the Lexus NX350.

Take any assumption you read on here inferred from pictures with a grain of salt. It is a camo test mule and they can do all kinds of stuff to throw you off.

They could have thrown a block of foam under the camo to simulate a door handle. They could add a bracket to look like a leaf spring mount. Etc.

About the only thing we can confirm is rear disks.

Nope. No way they’re putting the same engine in both the Tacoma and the Tundra.

If the next Tacoma looks like the 2022 tundra, I predict they will lose their spot at the top with best selling mid size truck. There are too many competitors in the mid size truck class for people to put up with driving something like that. Its not the same old mid size truck class anymore.

You’re correct. While others have uppped their QC game, Toyota has been either stagnant or slightly declined.

The next gen Tacoma will get a twin turbo 4 for its base engine and a hybrid 4 for the optional engine.
