3rd Brake Light Safety Recall?

The dealer told me I would have to remove my shell before they could fix it. 2019 double cab. kept in garage since purchase. No visible leakage inside cab. I'm pretty sure the shell was designed like that for a reason. I think it could be done. I've worked in tighter situations than this.

 

Nope. I wouldn't do it with the shell on either.

 

Whether you’ve worked in tighter situations is besides the point. It’s not you doing it- contorting and if following procedure being precise all the while not inflicting damage to vehicle/liability etc.

in all honesty its a common curtesy thing, for me, to give someone the work needed to do the job and safely. I can’t tell you how many times i go out to a call to fix their garage and you can’t even get to the damn fn door or opener. Then most have the bright idea to give me “permission” to move whatever I need That’s when I point out what I need THEM to move to gain access to fix THEIR problem while I get my tools. Maybe not apples to apples exactly but same concept. This applies to anyone you hire to do a job (maybe except a plumber… you can’t curtesy flush for them if they are called out for a clog ). But prepping the area that needs work prior for any discipline (whether it be making room, cleaning up etc) is most definitely appreciated/respectful and shows you value their time as well. Get in/fixed/out because your not the only job sorry for the mini rant… more of psa really

 

What are the odds of getting the stealership to install one of those brake blink module things while they have everything opened up? And maybe replace the cargo lights with leds if I provide them of course?

 

Yeah, I'm not sure why people can't grasp why they need to remove their shell.
Toyota is losing money on this already they want their techs to perform the job in the shortest amount of time possible and reduce risk of damage.
Do people really expect them to remove their shell and reinstall it free of charge?
Or lay on top of it and struggle to get the light out?
I'm just glad Toyota stepped up and is doing this for those of us out of warranty.
Because let's be honest with ourselves, car manufacturers have left people to deal with much worse on their own when out of warranty.

 

Anyone have a cap on their truck that kept them from inspecting this light?? I have an RSI smartcap on currently. When I was at the dealer for my service they told me they couldn’t get close enough to inspect it What do y’all think I should do?? I haven’t had any leaking problems into the cab yet. Should I pull it off and have them check it or just leave it alone?

 

They perform the work while standing in bed, with slider window open. When mine was done, they asked if my bed was clear of items (tool boxes etc). My factory hard tri fold tonneau was ok to leave on but needed to be folded up.

 

A DIY kit we could buy would be a nice option.

 

Don't think I'd go that route. If you do it yourself and later it starts to leak, Mother Toyota won't be there for you.

 

I agree. But for some reason, Toyota Canada has not seen fit to include Canadian trucks in this campaign (yet). So I’d like to “do it myself” but can’t even order the repair kit from my Cdn dealer.

If you have had no water intrusion, the external repair kit is available from US dealers or on line. ~$26 USD.

I’m willing to wear the big boy pants on this topic. Most others wouldn’t, I get that. Personal decision.

If I’m doing the work, though, I’d want to replace the whole thing.

 

I’d rather do it myself too. Because I know for a fact I would do better at the install both the sealant trim fix or full replace/pull headliner fix. That’s the unfortunate reality of my life that I’ve come to expect

 

If you replace it with a new third brake light it's my understanding it comes with a sufficient gasket that they are using on the newer trucks.

 

Any chance you know of this part number? I suppose search for chmsl for 2021 tacoma double cab?

 

Why didn't they start using this new third brake light back in 2017 when this problem first surfaced?

 

The problem with the 16s - 19s is that the gasket "can" deteriorate over time. The replacement, after water intrusion, is the whole deal plus mold mitigation if needed. The external caulking and bezel, which is all I'd want, is insurance against possible future water intrusion, 'cause I "may" have one of those which can deteriorate over time. Although Toyota Canada doesn't think so. (yet)

Just had this TSB done on the 2017 SR5 my company has me drive for work when I took it in for normal service. Haven't had any issues with leaking thus far, but wanted to play it safe and make sure there's no issues going forward - way easier to have it done now while I've time for it than and it's just changing the outer housing wait until it's potentially already a bigger problem and more of a time inconvenience.

Also, you can see in the photo that a spider somehow managed to crawl inside the brake light housing, then got stuck and died in there. Didn't exactly inspire confidence in me that the housing was water proofed enough

 

A bead of caulking and a new bezel should be sufficient if you’ve had no issue s to date.

 

I had no idea about this recall until I had to stop by the dealer to get them to checkout a fuel line sleeve that burst due to the way some moron reinstalled the fuel lines after performing the fuel pump recall. The lady at the service desk told me about this recall and said that Toyota wasn't sending notifications to owners for this one like they did for the fuel pump.
