Please check my math...

Looking at getting a TT to go down the west coast from WA and across to AZ and from what I calculate the Taco sucks for towing...

GCWR - 11290 lb
GVWR - 5600 lb

TV - 5240 lb (includes 2xpeeps, 1xdog, fuel and all accessories - weighed on CAT scales)

11,290 - 5240 = 6050

6050 x.8 = 4840 (20% built in for crossing mountain passes etc)

As I see it my trailer should be no heavier than 4840lb wet and the tongue weight should be no more than 360lb, correct?

The tongue weight seems to be the limiting factor here and would indicate I can only tow a trailer up to around 3300 lb.

Am I doing my math right?

You are correct, if you want to go exactly by the books.

 

You might want to consider frontal area of trailer as well, makes a huge difference on the experience of towing.

 

Side area less so, but will make it break a cross windy day as well.

 

You sir are correct. If you follow the book the Tacoma will barely tow a wet fart however the Tacoma will do it okay. My TT is 3400 unloaded and right at 4k with food and supplies w no water. The Tacoma does okay pulling this and I have gone up some decent grades without issue. I did add power via a blower and it has helped considerably. Frontal area is the biggest killer behind the Tacoma and most Small / Midsized trucks. I have talked to a few friends with Taco's and Colorado/Canyon's who have added canopies and said it has made a noticeable difference when towing.

Where did you get the supercharger done?

I have a tonneau cover and believe it makes a good difference to aero back there, I was considering getting a Bestop canopy to further help with towing and adding the least amount of weight in the process...

On a side note I just moved to the area and cycled through Botthel the other day, looks like some good breweries right there...

 

Totally, been trying to look for 7 to 7.5'ers with a good front end and double axle. Really like the Nano Apex 213rds but lack of oven/hood was a negative. Another caravan that is top of the list is the Vista Cruiser 23rss.

 

I work for a performance automotive shop in Redmond and set us up as a Magnuson dealer so I could get a discount on it. I did the install myself at our shop. I too have a factory tonneau cover but the height and width of a camp trailer creates a big frontal area for wind coming off the bed. There are lots of decent breweries in the area. You primarily into road riding? I am a fairly avid cyclist also.

 

Can't truthfully say I'm into any riding right now unless it's to a pub I used to MTB a crazy amount in my teenage years (late 90's when it was okay to wear lycra on a MTB) and I always loved the challenge of passing a roadie. Our bikes had been in friends garage for 7 years so was dusting them off

Do you officially install them and do you have a ballpark on a price installed. Are there any time delay with parts right now?

 

From what I hear they are about 8 weeks out. I can ask our service manager for a price quote.

 

Yes but you need 12% of the trailer weight on the tongue for stability. Plus 100 pounds of your trailer needs to be a weight distribution hitch.

 

Thanks, I did include 100# WDH in my total vehicle weight, this leaves only 360# left for tongue weight.

 

Thanks, Ultimately putting a supercharger on doesn’t officially change my tow ability. I imagine it brings the revs down some which would improve mpg and fuel tank range whilst obviously giving more power.

EDIT: YOU TOLD ME WHAT TOWED ABOVE…Do you tow? If so what weight and how has the blower improved things for you?

my trailer is 3432lbs with battery and a full propane tank. With a normal load of food and drinks we are right at 4K lbs. I have towed it with an additional 500lbs distributed between the truck and trailer. We are a family of 4 with 2 younger kids and a 20lb dog. My truck is lifted with 285/75r16’s and stock gearing (auto). The truck does have a set of sliders. The last time I put my truck on the scales at work this was its weight with a full tank of gas.
