This is to absorb the compression in case you have a head on collision, so the steering shaft doesn’t punctures you. I wouldn’t recommend removing it.

I’m gonna remove it. My truck is a rolling death trap anyways.

As already said, it's a crumple zone on the intermediate shaft.
Apparently the telescoping portion right at the base of the interior steering assembly is also a collapsible/crumple zone too, but it's only about 2 inches of depth.

I wonder if this is the cause of your light grinding you’re hearing.

Now you have me curious I don't remember my stick one looking like that.

With as much as you've changed to the front end that crumbling in an accident is the least of your concerns. People forget that every change from stock reduces the factory reaction to collisions.

If it’s oem it should have it, I bet yours has it too. And my thoughts exactly, my front end isn’t gonna crumple anywhere near stock so whats one more deviation from that.

You hit a car and your aren't crumplin' you flyin'

Flying River makes steering shafts that are dainty and are sleeved togther if you really want to have some collapsing ability you could just get some tubing inside of some tubing I mean it's kinda how the boys running 4 spline DS do it.

If I would have known it was a crumple zone before I started grinding away, I likely would’ve left it as-is and just notched the frame a hair. It hardly needed much and would’ve taken 30 min with a plasma. But since I’ve already ground it down a little I don’t trust it’s structural integrity and I would rather not buy a new one since they’re like $160. Oh well, hopefully this lesson helps out others reading this.

    I. CHOOSE. DEEAAATTTHHHH!!!

8” of 0.875x0.120 DOM tubing was perfect. Trimmed maybe 1/2” off to fine tune the length.

For those running the rack and heimed tie rods, what are you doing for boots? I’m trying some tundra boots but they’re a pain in the ass. The bolt on the inner clevis mount keeps tugging the boot off of the rack. I’m wondering if there’s something a bit bigger that’ll work better. Idk what rack is larger than a tundra rack though, maybe something out of a one ton. Maybe I’ll peruse the auto parts store this week.

I personally don't run boots on mine and don't have issues. However I was contemplating the idea of running like the velcro neoprene covers SealSavers that you find on like dirtbike forks. Or like A CV repair boot that SDHQ sells theyre heavy duty and plenty big enough.

I was thinking about that too, like make one out of leather. Basically a shift boot. Idk if it would get pinched between the clevis and rack though.

Meh only one way to find out lol....and the side you really would want to protect is the passenger side...that seal is more exposed than the rack gear side
