Front Sumos Super Thread

Mine do and I'm leveled. Ideally you want them to touch.

 

I contacted them just because and they said that they are supposed to be engaged immediately. I thought this was odd since they will be constantly under pressure but if that’s what they were designed for then I can’t complain.

 

Anyone running the blue rears on stock suspension. Back when I had a 2nd gen people said the Sumo springs made the ride rough so I went with airbags. On my 3rd gen I would rather go Sumo if the stock ride is not bad. I sometimes carry multiple dirt bikes which cause the stock rear to hit the bump stops. I rarely carry real heavy lumber loads like I used to on my 2nd gen.

 

Mine are a 1/2 inch from touching in the front and about 1 1/2 in the rear.

 

Ride isn't "bad" with the sumos in the rear. you know they're back there and they do sort of make a bit more bouncy/shimmy feeling and they do make the rear of the truck feel more firm but also super controlled and hits no matter how hard (rocks, potholes, etc.,) are never HARSH. is there a lot of driving where you'd never feel any contact in the rear, yes. It's kind of a wash for me in the end b/c the enhanced control and confidence of never getting jarred on top of being able to load down my truck and remain pretty level

 

i second this opinion almost totally. you definitely know theyre there unloaded but i would buy them again if i had to do it over again. they ride really nice when loaded down

 

Sumos just got delivered, awesome customer service with a quick turn around.

I plan to drive a nearby rutted out dirt road immediately before and after the install to try to get an objective opinion of them.

 

Bro! That's a stroke of genius. I bought a large pipe wrench to remove mine... I've never seen this method suggested. Well done.

 

whats the ole saying? "necessity is the father of invention" to be honest i tried an oil filter wrench first when i realized i didnt have a big enough wrench

 

I have a giant set of channel locks I've used for years removing oil filters. Just grab it and twist, always works on the old spin on filters. Worked great on the bump stops also, they surrendered without a fight.

Ordered Thursday, installed on Monday. Not bad

They turned out better than expected. Bumps on and off road are muted and if you bottom out the suspension its not as jarring as with typical bump stops.

Install was incredibly easy. It was a little pricy but I think it was worth it. Shout out to Sumo Springs for a great product

 

i have the blue sumo on stock rears. They have 1/2” clearance normally and don’t make the ride rougher. I did notice less body lean on cornering. Under a load ( pop up camper ) they really ride nice. Keeps the back from sagging too. The fronts are arriving today. Hope to get the on after work.

 

Yup, pretty much same for me...

The blue Sumo's on the rear of my truck do not constantly touch the frame. I have about 1/4" of space between my Sumo's and the frame, with a full tank of gas so my ride stayed the same. They only touch frame and reduce quite a bit of sag when I tow my 15 foot Jayco travel trailer. I rarely haul gear in the bed unless we're camping. My truck is all stock suspension but I do have a Lomax Tonneau cover, and a full size spare underneath (17x8.5 FSW wheel with a 265/65R17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W) so there's a little weight in the rear.

 

How were those rutted roads?

Well, finally got them off and put a 1/2 thick neoprene/rubber spacer under it. Was a pain to get off, had to use an oil filter wrench and be careful not to cut the spring. I’ll do a test drive later. The spacer does not cover the entire base of the spring but does mostly cover the truck side mounting surface so I’m not too concerned. I’ll update after a drive.

 

So how does it handle?

 

I’m not sure that it felt any better. I got to take it on some washboard roads and they didn’t seem to do much. That said, I’ve not driven on the road with them before the spacers. I’ll record them in action and see how they look.

full disclaimer, the feeing from the washboard road had more to do with my suspension than the sumos. My springs are rated 827#per inch and I have E rated tires so it’s already a stiff ride. Waiting till Black Friday and hopping for a better than 25% off the springs I need.

 

Meh, I would of gone with hard plastic over a soft material. Has anyone not contacted them about spacers yet? I mentioned they had spacers for the rears if asked awhile back and also noted they were of a hard type plastic material (same as the base of the spring and same size diameter of the base).

hard/soft/hard/soft sandwich rather than hard/hard/soft seems could have a type of unwanted “wobble” in the base material. Premature wear and tear seems a possibility no? Food for thought
